Baby swimming lessons - too early?

Is 6 months too early to start swimming lessons do you think? Though the baby won't actually be swimming obviously just splashing around and getting used to the water im afraid. Im just about to pay for a place in 6 weeks of 'baby first swim' classes and not sure if I should bother.

Anyone else start swimming with their baby at 6 months?

Thanks m

Not at all! Babies can start much younger, mine did at about 6 months and absolutely loves it! The younger the better imo

It could be a great way to get out of the house and meet other parents of babies the same age. No one is expecting the baby to actually swim. It's just a fun activity and getting the baby used to the water. It's not much fun taking the baby on your own each week when the baby is so small. If it's not too expensive then why not?

Yes fair enough, just offering an alternative. I did think the lessons were ridiculously priced for what you got and there were always other people to chat to at our local pool. Each to their own though!

My DS had his first lesson at 11 weeks with a private company. He’s been going ever since and is now 3.5 y/o.

Lots of people do! Their children learn to swim super young!

I chose not to, because the water will definitely have baby wee / flecks of poo in it from the other babies, and also lotsa powerful chemicals, and I just didn’t want that crap in DD’s mouth when it was so easy to go to something else instead.

If you don't fancy swimming lessons just take them yourself. It's all about water confidence at this age.
I've took my daughter since she was 12 weeks, she's now 3.5. Never paid for lessons as they are extortionate. But when she's 4 if she wants to have swimming lessons she can

If you like going swimming and fancy something social in a group then go for it. Obviously it’s way too young to learn to swim and you get the same water confidence (if that’s really a thing they can’t get in the bath?) by just taking them yourself to the local pool. Personally I couldn’t think of anything worse so mine didn’t have any lessons until they were 3 and could go into the pool by themselves but they progressed really quickly as we did 1:2 and then 1:1 lessons. But if you think you’d enjoy then why not try a term and see how you get on?

DD(15) did it from about 4 months-15 months. She loved it initially, then didn't. We stopped and took her paddling in the baby pool at the local sports centre and on holiday.

She had some group swimming lessons (5 or 6 kids) from about 4. Admittedly we paid for some 1to 1 lessons when she was a bit older, but swimming is her mindfulness activity.

We did it from 11 weeks. Loved it and made some really great friends there.
