Would you be annoyed at this?

My MIL bought my DD2 some dresses. She hands them over saying "I would like to see her wearing more dresses. Leggings might be more comfortable, but I'd prefer it, as a girl, if she would wear dresses more often". I think she's a CF and she won't be wearing them on principle. I can't believe anyone would say such a thing!

I would just smile and tell her that as her parents you are putting her comfort first so she'll wear dresses when she wants to or when you deem it appropriate.

Don't lose your temper. Don't be snappy. Don't be harsh. Present yourself as the calm and in control person and she won't really be able to argue with that.

And yes, I'd be furious on the inside.

How old is DD? If she's young and near the crawling stage then dresses are completely impractical anyways!

My face would have said it all if my mil said that to me. I prefer not to put my dd in dresses but since noone who has bought them for her has come out with such crap I just smile and say thank you knowing they will rarely if ever be worn.

My dd is 30 my mum used to say the same to me just say yeah whatever and just put her in leggings.

I’d want to dance naked around a bonfire of the dresses in her back garden, frankly.

However depending on the age of my DD I’d let her wear them if she wants to, and if she doesn’t then I certainly wouldn’t be making her. I would also tell MIL that what she wants to see my DD in is utterly irrelevant and is not something I would ever, ever take into account. Threads like these remind me that I’m so lucky to have my MIL.

My father in law used to say this to me ! Sounds pervy I know but he wants - he was just old and from a generation of here women wore dresses ( I live in leggings!) he's passed now but just wanted to add my advice as your mil sounds like an older generation? My mother is the same age and doenst have this view mind!

For me personally would have to pull her up on it and say something but that's just me

Come to think of it mil is always buying clothes and they've always been dresses!! She just doesn't say anything about wearing more dresses but if she did I would have to say something

How did you manage not to laugh in her face?

Mischance · 10/01/2023 16:14

Just shrug and do exactly as you please. This is manipulative behaviour.

She's too young to choose what she wears, and too young to be pulling up tights when they fall down, which is the main issue! I just find it irritating when people want to dress up little girls for their own satisfaction.

I think I’d laugh!

Start dressing her in joggers or jeans when you see MIL. And tiny trainers. And hoodies.

RandyMandyy · 10/01/2023 17:56

Buy your MIL a doll.
