Sedation for dental treatment 18 month old

Has anyone been through this?

My 18 month old daughter has some dental problems which need looking at, but dentist can't treat her as she is too young to cooperate with the dentist.

He says we will go to the community dentist where they can sedate her so the dentist can take a look.

The idea of my toddler being sedated is terrifying. But I know her teeth need treating before they get worse and potentially cause her pain.

Before anyone asks I am doing everything recommended for good tooth care and always have. My other children have never had amy dental problems. The dentist is not sure why she has these problems but they need looking at properly.

Has anyone ever had a young child undergo sedation? Looking for experiences and advice so I know what to expect as I am dreading it.

Me.

My dd came around and was very very scared, but passed very quickly. Was tired rest of day so we just snuggled up abs watched hours of tv

Caterpillar1990 · 09/01/2023 16:29

What dental problems does she have?

RavenT · 09/01/2023 16:29

Watching with interest. My son is 9 and has been referred for 2 extractions under sedation via the Community dental service as he is super anxious about the dentist (he shakes during a check up 🙁). I appreciate he's much older, but I am still worried.

Did she have a few antibiotics courses as a baby?

What dental problems does she have?

Decay and now a chipped tooth. Before the chipped tooth dentist was saying we should wait until she is 3 to treat. Now he says she needs it looking at properly. I think it does as although it doesn't hurt at the moment, her teeth have been getting worse despite all my efforts to keep them healthy.

Decay at this age will indicate a deeper problem OP.

my DD’s was put down to lots of antibiotics when a baby

Gigglechop · 09/01/2023 16:39

I think your approach should be that there is literally no other solution

So you need to be bright and breezy for your daughter and expect her to be escaped upon waking but will get over it quickly

Gigglechop · 09/01/2023 16:39

Escaped should read scared!

I would be interested to know what kind of problems could be underlying so I can try and address it if I can.

No she was quite well as a baby thankfully, no antibiotics until a recent infection.

That is really unfair, there are medical conditions which can cause this. That is why they want to investigate it.

Well thanks for that. I just said that I have been caring for them, have saught dental treatmemt several times, followes all advice and the dentist doesn't know what is the cause himself. But sure just be nasty to me when I just found out my daughter has to be sedated.

@Unhappyandunsure how bad are the dental problems? Sometimes you can look after them properly and they still decay. How's her diet?

Dora26 · 09/01/2023 16:44

@Caterpillar1990 very helpful - I don’t think!

Mouthfulofquiz · 09/01/2023 16:44

@Caterpillar1990 are you this much of a dickhead in real life?

Oh shut up you idiot 🙄

percypal · 09/01/2023 16:47

One of my children has hypermineralisation which has lead to problems.

Actually astounding that someone can say SS should be involved. Hilarious.

Stressfordays · 09/01/2023 16:48

Caterpillar1990 · 09/01/2023 16:44

What medical conditions?

Vitamin deficiency, weak enamel problems, antibiotic use just to name a few.

Even adults can care for their teeth perfectly and be more susceptible to problems then others. You sound very ignorant. This woman has 2 other children with no dental problems so I doubt shes just forgot to brush her 3rds teeth 🙄

Oh shut up.

My DD had CMPA (which went undiagnosed for months and still cannot have dairy) which involved an extreme amount of projectile vomiting, IV antibiotics as a newborn in NICU - both reasons that can cause major tooth issues.

By sheer luck, she is 7 and doesn’t have any issues, but that doesn’t stop me getting her checked privately every 3 months and worrying like fuck.

It is hard for the dentist to say as he can't properly look in her mouth but as far as I can tell there is decay to 2 of her teeth (next to each other).

Her diet is good. We are careful about balanced diet as her sister is prone to constipation. She is still breastfed but but eats 3 meals a day.
