Really need advice about heating with a newborn

We’ve been having the heating on around 10 hours in 24, at 19 degrees, then 17 degrees the rest of the time. The bill is horrendous this month and I’m so worried.

is it dangerous to have heating set to 17 all the time instead? Is that too low? An alternative would be using an oil heater in one room in the day and then switching heating off completely? Very stressed

A temperature of 16-20 degrees is perfect for a baby, if not.it . put a thicker tog bag/blanket on them and checking their temp through the night to see how they're doing x

Can you use a gro egg or other room thermometer to work out which is your warmest room?
My thermostat is in one of the coldest parts of the house, so if it’s set to 15 the baby’s bedroom doesn’t actually fall below 18.5 even though downstairs is chilly.

17 is totally okay - just keep checking if they're an okay temp. Their back (just below the neck) should feel nice and warm, but not clammy

16 is probably about the coldest you want the room to be, but it's still considered "ideal" for babies

It sounds too hot tbh, I never heated my house like that. Layer their clothes so you can add/take off. I found the best way to check their general temperature is putting the back of my hand against the back of their neck. Its gives you a rough guide as to whether you need to disturb them or can leave them be. You can always add a baby blanket rather than clothing.

When my youngest was born the heating had broken (December) and the house was freezing. I dressed her in 2 baby gros and kept her swaddled when asleep (next to me). The midwife was concerned as the house was so cold but even she commented that she was "very toasty" when she undressed her to weigh her. 16 is absolutely fine.
