Toddler in corner of cot

Is anyone else’s child like this?! 😳 What is it about the bloody corners?!

DS is 2 and every single night, he’ll work his way into one of the top corners of his cot and toss and turn there all night banging himself against the top and side. Doesn’t matter how many times I get up and move him - he’ll end up back in the corners within half an hour tops 😬 Doesn’t seem to bother him at all - he’s quite happy there! It’s just so bloody noisy with him banging away there tossing and turning all night!

If I took the sides off to make a toddler bed he’d fall straight out every night with the way he goes on 😳 hes got plenty of space - it’s a 140x70 cot.

Any suggestions to try and stop him moving? He’s still in sleeping bags as he absolutely will NOT tolerate a duvet at all. He hates any kind of blanket etc 😬 same goes for pillows!

Tuck the end of his sleeping bag under the end of the mattress.

Or just get some ear plugs and leave him to it.

Scramble1805 · 08/01/2023 05:52

Oh yes, our son did this at that age! And we only had an audio monitor so I kept going back in to check what the noise was.
It was something he just outgrew closer to 3.

We tried a duvet around 2 1/2 but he kept wriggling out and sleeping on top of the pillow in the top corner. So I kept the duvet for his daytime nap, so he would get used to it, and reintroduced at bedtime a couple of months later and he was much better then, that's when we took the side off finally and turned it into a toddler bed.

Does he have a pillow? That might be a good first step to get him used to sleeping in the middle.
Otherwise if he's not doing any harm then just leave him be.

My 2 year old is the same, except he sleeps in with me. He’ll edge me to the verge of the bed & take over my side / pillow, even though he has a whole side of his own. It’s why he can’t be in a cot. Or in his own bed as he’ll fall out. I’m thinking of a bed with a bed rail?

@NuffSaidSam 😬 are either of those safe? 🙈 I don’t think I’d be comfortable with either.

@Scramble1805 Glad it’s not just mine 🙈 I do use a video monitor so at least I’m not constantly getting out of bed to check lol. I had planned on doing the same as you and introducing the duvet during the nap first by DS dropped his nap a couple of months ago 😳😬 the only time he ever naps in the day now is if we’re on a longer car journey! I have actually tried a pillow and he just won’t have it at all. Even if he comes into out bed in the morning for a cuddle he lies down below the pillow and pushes the covers off!

@HelloBunny Oh gosh, poor you 🙈 I’ve only coslept with mine for a few nights when we had a sickness bug and he ended up sleeping on my face each night so I can only imagine how you end up every night 🤣 I’ll definitely need bedrails when DS goes into his toddler bed but he’s never tried to climb out his cot or anything so I plan to Lee him contained as long as possible lol

My little boy was like this, used to get stuck in the corner with his head. Only thing that stopped it was giving him a duvet and pillow. Maybe he's too hot in the sleeping bag and is wriggling to get cool. With duvet atleast he can cool down with it by moving it if he wants. Or perhaps sleeping bag is too restrictive for him now and uncomfortable. Does he get twisted with it? Give the duvet a go for a good 2 weeks.

fajitaaaa · 08/01/2023 07:17

Same! Duvet reduced it somewhat

Canttouchthis88 · 08/01/2023 07:20

I did this as a child, and still do as an adult! I can only fall asleep if the bed is next to a wall and my head/face is down the side of the crack next to the wall! And yes, that does sound mental I do realise haha!

ForeverTired89 · 08/01/2023 07:33

My DD used to do it too. Turns out she wanted out of the sleeping bag, stopped when I changed to a duvet.

KangarooKenny · 08/01/2023 07:34

This is why mine went in a single bed by 2.

GoAgainstNicki · 08/01/2023 07:37

My 20 month DD does the same!

I was thinking to take my DD’s bars off once she turns 2 but I’ve had the exact same thought. No clue how she’ll be okay as she’ll just roll right out

@Searchingforsunshine No, doesn’t seem to get twisted at all in the sleeping bag. He point blank refuses a duvet. Fast asleep within 5 mins once his sleeping bag is on. A duvet turns bedtime into a screaming crying battle. He won’t even have a blanket if he’s in a pram/buggy! I try it periodically to see and it’s always been the same 🤷🏻‍♀️

@Canttouchthis88 🤣🤣 thats funny! When I was a child & teen I had to be next to the wall and always slept with one leg out of the covers against the wall. I have no idea why 🙈🤣 I eventually grew out of it lol.

@ForeverTired89 I’ve tried so many times with the duvet 🙈 that seems to be the answer going by everyone on here though!!

@KangarooKenny I honestly don’t know that a bugger bed would make much difference to him just now. He just loves the corner 🤣

What do you perceive the risks of each option to be?

@GoAgainstNicki I always thought DS would definitely be out of the cot before this age but i decided that I’ll be leaving him in until he tries to get out himself 🤷🏻‍♀️ If he’ll happily stay in there then it’s better that he has less freedom to roam and cause chaos in the night lol

Keep him in the bag and cot as long as you can (ie until he tries to climb out of the cot which is dangerous in a sleeping bag). You might make it to 3 if you’re lucky.

regards the banging around, id leave him to it!

@NuffSaidSam I think he’d get quite twisted in his sleeping bag with the end being stuck under the mattress. Which may or may not be unsafe - but I’d imagine he’ll wake up pissed that he can’t move and that means less sleep for everyone 🤷🏻‍♀️
And I personally wouldn’t ever wear earplugs and be unable to hear my child in the night.

I don't think the end of a sleeping bag being twisted is dangerous, anymore than using a duvet is. If you think being unable to move will piss him off then you'll have to put with his corner habits!

I agree that if earplugs mean you couldn't hear him at all i.e. if he cried, then that's not safe. I think how much earplugs deaden noise is probably wearer and plug dependant but ime doesn't drown out a crying baby (but would deaden the noise of a cot banging against a wall).

amispeakingintongues · 08/01/2023 19:33

Mine has always done this. He's 19 months now and we just let him get on with it.

Monstermoomin · 08/01/2023 19:34

You could always try sleeping bags that have arms and feet. We did that for our daughter when she was over 1 because she was trying to romp around her cot and it was dangerous otherwise.

We also had to take her side off and turn it into the cot bed at 19/20 months because she could climb out. She did fall out many times, but it was a sort of slow roll/fall off as she'd tuck herself into the corners too and she was fine. You can get little rails but we went without to lesson injury with her climbing.

We also introduced a duvet at this point and she slept with her bum in the air on her front with it often shoved all over her head (nice and stressful).
