Is this normal behaviour or a cause for concern? Autism worry in baby

Hi,

I have noticed from early on that my daughter doesn't like loud noises. She will cry if I use the hand dryer in the baby changing, she cries when I de ice my car if she is in her car seat (if I hold her whilst scrapping the windows she is fine) and has recently started crying if I hoover although this is fairly new as normally she would crawl after the hoover. Does this sound normal/ok or could it be a sign of autism? She is 11 months.

She also will notice the smallest bit of fluff/dirt on the floor and likes to pick up any tiny little crumbs she finds whilst in the high chair. Her attention to the smallest detail is very impressive!

Her development is fine, she waves, claps, high fives, smiles, gives eye contact, has started walking with her walker and pulls herself up to the couch. She is also very sociable and mostly a happy wee girl but I can't stop worrying that her issue with loud noises and her attention to detail is something to be concerned about.

Thanks for any replies in advance 😊

It all sounds totally normal, try not to worry. My daughter still hates hand dryers and the hoover at 16 months. And still notices tiny details eg fluff on carpet, stickers on windows etc.

Really normal and definitely not a cause for concern on its own

My 4 YO was like this. Still hates certain loud noises that are a 'surprise'. She used to also hate singing 'Happy Birthday' at parties, but then will sing at the top of her lungs at preschool & at home 🤦‍♀️ I had the same concerns but when I looked in to it I realised that there would be other red flags for autism which she didn't have. I think she's definitely a sensitive kid at times & this seems to fit with her aversion to certain loud noises.

Normal. I work with young children who have autism. At this age, we would be concerned if social skills are not developing appropriately (smiling, laughing, eye contact, waving, maybe saying a few words). Not liking loud noises is normal, as is picking up little bits (she's practicing her pincer grip, which is very good).

My DD developed hoover phobia around 18 months, it sounds obvious but I started telling her the hoover was about to go on and it didn't bother her at all after that.

My older primary aged daughter has sensory processing disorder and was like this as a baby. But she also had other non noise related symptoms (lots of spinning, unable to tolerate clothes). My son is sensitive to noise but doesn’t have sensory processing disorder. My daughter needs some small accommodations at school but is otherwise a very intelligent happy and sociable girl.

She is practicing her pincer grip as mentioned above. Part of normal development.

Normal.

My 3 year old DD is autistic and isn't bothered about loud noises at all, but struggles with social communication. The autism spectrum is huge. Autism is diagnosed through an age appropriate play based test called ADOS. If her play and social skills are developing at the expected rate then she would not be given an autism diagnosis.

All totally normal

Twizbe · 08/01/2023 07:55

Totally normal.

My eldest was petrified of hand dryers. Lots of children are.

AclowncalledAlice · 08/01/2023 08:30

Totally normal.

FWIW I'm in my late 50's and the sound of someone scraping ice off the car makes my skin crawl, so I totally get why it would make an 11mo cry.

Both my kids hated certain loud noises as young children. Car alarms, hoovers, hand drivers, fireworks.

One is autistic, one isn’t (both older teens now). I think it’s fairly common.

My 2 1/2 year old HATES hand dryers, and has recently started getting worried about hoover noise.
