Dad taking kids abroad

Not sure if this is the right place to post but just looking to see if anyone can help as google isn't bringing much up for my situation.
My in laws are booking a family holiday in October with some money my oh's grandmother left when she died. Unfortunately I cannot get the time off work and it has to be in half term. My oh would really like to go and I've said I'm happy for him to go with the kids if he wants to (they'll be 6 and 18 months at the time).
The only thing I can't seem to get an answer on is whether I need to sign a letter or something for security? Everything online relates to separated parents/grandparents taking kids abroad etc but we are together, just not married.
Does anyone have any experience who can help?

I would do one just in case, you can get templates on the internet from a Google search for free. I travelled with DS when he was 6 with my parents and they asked him and me lots of questions about where his Dad was. We didn't have a letter and it was ok, but a letter would have helped. He's also travelled solo with his Dad and I've always done a letter for them. They have had to use it a couple of times.

Do the kids have the same surname? They need to take birth certifficate if not.
Also when my il laws took DD to USA and South Africa I needed to sign a form with a solicitor for them. Xx

In multiple trips I was asked for proof once. I was advised to always travel with letter and copy of birth certificates.

My 9yo got questioned on pretty much her whole passport in France a few weeks ago travelling with both of us, whereas her sisters passport was barely glanced at before being stamped... it can be very random.

I've been all over the world with my kids, they have dads surname and hes only came with us once yonks ago. 5 different continents, 11 countries. Never been asked for anything

I was traveling with my DS when he was 5 months old, funny enough he has my DPs surname and a different nationality than I do, all they did was asking once: 'is that your son?'. I had his BC with me just in case, but no one wanted to see it.
Better to have it though.

It depends on where they are going. Some countries require formal permission if only one parent is going, Mexico for example, most countries don't care. If he has a different surname to them I suggest taking their birth certificates but that is all.
