Big discrepancy between height and weight

I've measured my son, just turned 13 months, and there's a big difference between his height and weight on the growth charts.

Weight: 22.5lbs, 60th percentile

Height: 72cm, 2nd percentile

He looks in proportion to me, so I'm a bit shocked. Is this a cause for concern? I'd ask my health visitor but she's recently retired and I've not been assigned a new one yet.

Are you plotting it on the length chart rather than height? As when they're around 2 and go to the height chart, there is always a drop because it's measured differently.

The length chart as he's 13m. I put him on the floor and measured him lengthways. Got my husband to check and the measurement is accurate. 😕

Do you mean 13cm? Because there's no way he's 13cm unless he's Tom Thumb.

😂😂 That would be something.

If you are certain you are right then yea it is a little concerning. But wouldn’t you have noticed, or at least wouldn’t you be able to see it once you realised? Makes me wonder f there’s a weighing or measuring error

😂😂 That would be something.

I measured my feet for some new shoes yesterday and they were 27cm, so I was looking at my foot in disbelief that your baby could be half that!
Sorry, I'm obviously overtired this evening.

How are you measuring the weight? If you just stuck him on the bathroom scales it's unlikely to be accurate. Best way is to weigh yourself holding him, then without, and work out the difference, but even then most scales are only accurate to about 2lb (which is a lot for a baby).

I would speak to your health visitor if you’re concerned. However, my 4 month old DS is 50th centile for length and only 2nd centile for weight. He too looks in proportion, he’s just dinky. The health visitor wasn’t concerned and said some babies are longer and slim and some are shorter and heavier and it’s fine, we’re all different.

GAH3 · 07/01/2023 22:04

How does he look compared to other babies his age?

Measuring height/length is incredibly difficult ime. We're only just getting reliable-ish measurements now that DC is 2.5 and can follow instructions of "bum against the wall", "chin down" etc.

We re-weighed him this morning before breakfast and with a dry nappy: 21.75lb and the 48th percentile. This makes sense as it's following his curve.

We remeasured his length as well at 74cm. This is about the 10th centile, and also follows his curve. He doesn't look overweight to me but I presume he's either dense or cuddly! Needless to say he won't be going on a diet, haha.

Thanks for the advice and reassurance, ladies. ❤
