Making Formula

Hi, this has probably been asked a million times over but how do you make your formula? HV say to add powder to boiled water (after 30 mins) which is fine during day when making fresh to drink but is this okay when making bottle up for the night? 6 years ago with my other LO it was different and they said to add the powder to the cool boiled water when needed.. Just wondering does anyone make up 4oz of cool boiled water then add the extra 2oz of boiled water when needed and the powder, would this be hot enough to kill bacteria?

Premake according to the guidelines, flash cool and then and store in the back of the fridge. 🙂

Danikm151 · 06/01/2023 18:23

Or do a thermos of boiled water 🙂

Stelle2 · 06/01/2023 18:36

Thanks 😊 Will a thermos keep the water hot enough for throughout the night?

I always premade a few bottles for the night and stored them at the back of the fridge.

JLQ1020 · 06/01/2023 18:42

I use a perfect prep machine and when my baby was having night feeds used it as it only takes a few mins.
Once my baby dropped to 1 feed I used premade. Much handier.

I don’t know why I’m worrying that once made up and put in fridge then bacteria would start growing I suppose they would recommend that though if that was the case. I just can’t make fresh bottles through night waiting 30 mins for kettle then to be cool enough to drink

Pre-made is an option I didn’t think about for night feeds 😊

Buy a nuby.

Boil kettle or use thermos flask of boiled water, pour straight in. Add powder. Shake. Pour out at perfect temperature two minutes later.

Faster than a perfect prep.

SalviaOfficinalis · 06/01/2023 19:03

Pre made is very expensive!
I used to refrigerate and then microwave for a very short time to take the chill off. Shake vigorously so there’s no hot spots.

Perfect prep has had some concerns raised that it doesn’t kill all the bacteria. Having said that, lots of people use it without issue.

how do you do the water/powder ratio in it? Can you only use it for one bottle if you’re cooling it? Sorry not seen this before so don’t know how it works

This!

5 minutes a day to make up 24hrs worth) 10m flash cooling what I did other things, and that's all the work done for the day (husband would wash them and put them in the steriliser. I'd take them out of the steriliser and make them up).

I'd microwave briefly, give a very good swirl to get rid of any hot spots and check temp on wrist.

I kept a night one in an insulated container to keep cool, and heated it in a microwave (bought for a fiver) next to my bed. I didnt even need to get up, and first stir to feeding was under a minute so no crying.

Stelle2 · 06/01/2023 20:38

I make all the day bottles fresh ready for feed I just wasn’t sure about making them up for the night as HV tried to put me off doing that. Love this that you don’t even need to get out of bed. I don’t know why I am questioning things so much with my 2nd baby!

You can do 2oz of hot water to the powder and then add 4oz of pre measured cold water. Ideally the hot water should be allowed to cool slightly so it’s not hot enough to destroy the nutrients.

MGee123 · 06/01/2023 22:05

Just do 1/3 boiling water, add powder and mix then add remaining 2/3 of cold water. Will be warm but ready to drink. Essentially what the perfect prep does but without the machine.

redandwhite1 · 06/01/2023 22:57

Perfect prep when at home or that method if out (2oz boiling water and 4oz cooled)

SparkyBlue · 06/01/2023 23:19

I made up a batch of 5 or 6 at a time and kept them in the fridge . I gave them at room temperature so never reheated them

@Stelle2
Yes it’s just for making one fresh bottle from freshly boiled water to perfect temp formula in 2 minutes.

So boil the kettle
When it clicks pour boiled water into the Nuby (has the ounce measurements inside so just make what you need)
Add the required powder depending on your brand (we use kendamil so it’s one scoop per ounce - so 5 scoops for 5 ounce or 7 scoops for 7 ounce.
Then shake the Nuby to mix the powder for 10/20 seconds or so.
Turn it upside down for 5 seconds to activate the temperature thing and press the button.
You can just leave it now for a couple of minutes but I think it cools faster if you continue to shake for another 30 seconds or so.
Lid indicator turns green once it’s cool.
Pour into baby bottle and serve

Sounds complicated but it’s not and I have really broken that down to every action.

It's not the HV who has to use a faffy method at 3am

Its jot the HV who has to listen to a grumpy (and now much more awake) baby wake whilst you wait for a kettle to cool.

Making them up in advance isn't the absolute safest method that is possible, but it's perfectly adequate (or it wouldn't be recommended by the WHO as a perfectly adequate method.) The formula colleagues suggest the absolute safest method to avoid litigation. It's just the same as shampoos often saying to check with your dr before you use them 😂

We choose 'low risk is good enough ' every time we leave our home, drive a car, walk down the pavement etx.

Remember that is not in your HVs interest to make formula feeding seem convenient, and the extra faff of the protracted method wont affect her.

Very true!

Thermos will keep it hot for about 12 hours. I used to take one when making formula out and about

Starsnspikes · 08/01/2023 22:26

We use this flask with temperature display so we know the water is above 70 degrees:
amzn.eu/d/gtK9EkV

It works really well and allows us to mimic the perfect prep machine. So for night feeds I pre measure the formula, pre measure the cold water, and boil the kettle right before bed to fill the flask. When she wakes up all I have to do is mix the formula and hot water from the flask, then add the cold water. It takes less than a minute. The flask tends to keep the water above 70 for about 8-10 hours so it'll do the morning feed as well which is handy.
