10 week old keeps putting his thumb in his mouth

My 10 week old DS keeps putting his thumb and sometimes whole hand into his mouth. I don’t want him to get into the habit of it as so many kids I know have had the habit of sucking their thumb for ages. My cousins son started sucking his thumb at 2 months old and he broke his habit when he was 8 years old! Is it normal for a baby to be sucking their thumb so much? I have no clue

it's fine I wouldn't do anything about it!

He may well be teething. It's completely normal even if not - considering at that age they are pretty much eating and sleeping it's quite soothing for them, like sucking a nipple or bottle

Highlyflavouredgravy · 05/01/2023 16:52

Yes completely normal
You could give him a dummy which you can remove when he is older but otherwise leave him be

Normal, my 2 did it when they were that age.

dreamerkr · 05/01/2023 16:55

I don’t think he’s teething, isn’t he too young for that yet? And I tried giving him a dummy many times, he spits it out straight away haha 😂

Normal.

He's just exploring his foods basically

hands

Daisydreaming1 · 05/01/2023 16:56

He’s just exploring, I wouldn’t worry my little girl did it. She’s 13 months now and doesn’t suck her thumb.

trampoline123 · 05/01/2023 16:58

He's exploring and even if he sucks his thumb no big deal.

Also, babies can be born with teeth so never too young to be teething.

TangledWebOfDeception · 05/01/2023 16:58

He’s supposed to put his thumb/fingers/hands in his mouth. Babies do much of their first important exploring/learning through their mouth.

PinkPlantCase · 05/01/2023 16:58

It’s completely normal at that age. It doesn’t at all mean that he’ll suck his thumb for years.

MyDS had his fingers and thumb in mouth a lot at that age but he grew out of it (he’s 18 months now) it’s a developmental step.

Could also be hungry

Stevie6 · 05/01/2023 17:04

My middle DS sucked his thumb for a couple years when he was little, wasn't interested in a dummy. He's now nearly and adult and grew out of it with no lasting scars 😉

dreamerkr · 05/01/2023 17:05

Thanks guys. He’s definitely not hungry as I just fed him. How do you check if a baby is teething?

Leave him be - it is not a problem. Sometimes they are just testing out the limits of their own bodies and trying to find out which bits are actually his! Please do not start worrying about these little things so early on; it will spoil your enjoyment of your baby.

CoalCraft · 05/01/2023 19:47

Both my babies did/do this. With DD2 it generally means either she's hungry or she's about to poo!

SmileWithADimple · 05/01/2023 19:49

My DD was a thumb sucker, and yes it was a pain to get her to stop when she was older. But if they won't take a dummy then what can you do?

He obviously prefers his thumb - at least he won't lose it like a dummy. Don't worry about it.

Let him suck his thumb.
My DD did it from inside the womb and still does now (she's just turned 2.)

It keeps her happy, and there's really nothing you can do about it.
