Baby/toddler naps

Hey all, when did your baby drop to 1 nap/day?

My little one is 11 months and most days she only naps once. But she is overtired. Example today:
Woke up at 7.30
Went down for a nap at 11.45.
Woke up around 2pm
And then she didn't nap until she went for the big sleep at 8pm.
Sometimes she wakes up at night and has a bottle then back to sleep but sometimes she just sleeps through.
The last hour or so of the day she is very tired. Before you suggest I put her to bed earlier, I tried that, she just wakes up earlier the next day and then everything is ahifted by 1h.

So how does your 11 year old sleep look like? I am worried i am keeping her up too much but then if I try to make her nap when she's not ready she screams bloody murder and still doesn't sleep....

I would do a nap at 9:30am for around half an hour.

And then lunchtime nap 1pm-3/3:30pm.

But obviously easier said than done if she won't sleep earlier in the morning. That's what I would aim for though.

She probably wakes early because she’s over tired.

id do first nap after 2.5 he wake time, second nap after 3 he wake time, bedtime 3.5/4hrs after last nap. You’ll need to catch the sweet spot before she gets overtired.

Give her a later bedtime and second nap. As long as there is a decent chunk of tome between last nap and bedtime she will sleep.

Forgot to say on the few occasions when we gave her a 2nd nap , she eventually went to sleep around 10pm but also she woke up around 2 am wanting to play. Didn't settle back to sleep until we played for at least 1h.

Split nights are rough! Aim for around 2-3 hours total day sleep. You’ll just need to experiment with timings.

16 months and still on 2 naps. 12-15 months is the most common age to drop the first. 11 months would be unusual, I'd keep doing 2 for now. Perhaps try a 10 minute cat nap at 9.30 then go for main nap at 12-2. Bedtime at 7.30.

ToddleToddleToddle · 04/01/2023 07:15

Aside from the late bedtime, that doesn't look too bad. At 11 mo we still had a 10 minute nap in the morning, but on his birthday he dropped it and slept 12-2 then went to bed at 7 or half 7.

Looks like yours is ready for one nap. The only thing that stands out is the massive awake window after her nap. If going to bed earlier doesn't work, can you just do quiet games like jigsaws and reading?

I’m really confused what the issue is. You have a baby that’s sleeping 13.75h in 24h (which is right at the top end of average at this age of 11-14h) with either zero or one night feed and a great long nap in the middle of the day. I’d tolerate an hour of grumpiness in the evening for an otherwise really great routine for an 11 mo! X

And to answer your question, at 11 months DS still mostly had 2 naps, but we had hideously early morning starts (5:30am was a lie in) even with the morning nap strictly cut off at 30 minutes. The crack of dawn starts stopped within a week of dropping to one nap at about 13 months old.

Thanks @VVivaVivaa , not an issue per se. I was just wondering if it's normal or I am overexhausing her for no reason.
Also, in about a month, she will start nursery (8-2pm). And I'd love for her big nap to be after, not during as it feels like I'll be paying loads of money for her to sleep there lol. Hopefully by then she will have adjusted her schedule more or she'll just sleep a bit at nursery and then a longer sleep in the afternoon at home.
