Moses basket

I left the room to put the dogs away and my baby somehow managed to tip over the Moses basket she turned Six months on the 25th December and she can't sit so we can't work how she did it anyway.

Anyway, I took her to the hospital just to get her checked and this was within twenty mins (the drive was around 15)

The doctor wasn't very pleasant and he said I can't work out why you wouldn't put straps on her when she's in the Moses I said they don't have it (I checked it and mine don't) he said he didn't have any concerns to call SS but I'm so worried! Does she crawl yet? Can she sit yet? I was like no she doesn't.

I feel terrible anyway but I'm so fearful I will get a knock Tomorrow on my door! Please be kind ... The basket has been thrown off and my nerves are shattered ... The baby is fine!! Xx

Straps on a Moses basket? Is that even a thing? Sounds like a very unfair doctor. He said he had no cause to involve SS so I would try and forget his comments. Please forgive yourself. I wouldn’t have worried about leaving the room if my baby wasn’t rolling or sitting up yet either. I’m sure most mums are the same.

Sorry but 6 months is too old to be in a moses basket. Time for a cot. Hope your baby is ok.

dementedpixie · 03/01/2023 20:36

Was the moses basket on a stand or on the floor?

6 months seems quite old to be in it. Maybe your baby tried to turn over and that made it unbalanced.

I agree 6 months is too old for a Moses basket. They should be in a cot.

tealandteal · 03/01/2023 20:38

Can she roll over? 6 months is quite old for a Moses basket, she must be ready for a cot? That said I have never seen one with straps. Perhaps he was thinking of something else?

Trymein · 03/01/2023 20:39

Gosh my 6m old would have not fit in a Moses basket at that age! I think she would have meant straps to secure the stand so it didn’t topple. I don’t think you can really put a 6m old in a basket on a stand as they wriggle too much. Maybe put it on the floor instead?

AluckyEllie · 03/01/2023 20:39

I’m impressed they still fit in it at 6 months. They probably moved and managed to unbalance it. Even if social services did come (which I doubt as very overworked) it would be a quick visit where they would just run over what happened. The Moses basket is gone, you’ve learnt from it and no harm done.
Get a jumperoo if you need somewhere to put her briefly while you do chores, worked for us! Huge though, can’t wait to get it out of the house 😂

Firsttimemummy23 · 03/01/2023 20:40

The Moses basket is gone now! The guidelines for mine states that she continue using it until she can sit up which she can't however it's gone and lesson learnt! I think she might have turned and it flipped. I feel awful! Just worried about ss.

She can't roll from her back yet just belly to back, she was born 3 weeks early so she's a bit smaller than the average 6 months old she still fits in some 3-6 clothes and she still fit in the basket.

My baby was tiny but she only stayed in the basket for the first few weeks

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 03/01/2023 20:46

Who mentioned ss in the first place?

Littlepaws18 · 03/01/2023 20:46

You did absolutely the right thing, you went straight to hospital and you followed advice from the doctor and threw away the Moses basket. SS can't fault you for your actions after the fall.

I never had a Moses basket as I always regarded them as dangerous, especially on a stand. Instead I bought a bedside cot and always had the side up. They are sturdier, higher sides and if they roll won't tip.

Firsttimemummy23 · 03/01/2023 20:49

I asked him as I was worried, maybe I shouldn't. I have three beds for her, her main cot, next to me and the Moses. It was on a stand, I will never one ever again!

She's okay tho! Smiling laughing away she doesn't even seen to remember!

I’ve never seen a Moses basket with straps! Not in the basket and not to attach it to the stand – you’re supposed to be able to easily lift the basket off anyway.

Glad she’s OK: try not to panic. You were following guidelines – she can’t sit up, and if that’s all the instructions offered you weren’t to know most babies are out of the basket before six months – you took her straight to hospital. Most babies have rolled off a sofa or bed, or I know a couple who’ve tumbled downstairs: it’s not ideal but none of us are perfect and you got her checked out immediately. I can’t see why SS would have concerns.

AliceMcK · 03/01/2023 20:57

Was he English? My first 2 were born overseas and we didn’t have Moses baskets they were bassinets are a lot more sturdy and the baskets strap to the legs. I only used a Moses basket with one I had in the uk and it felt a lot more unsteady.

I don’t think you have done anything wrong keeping her in a Moses basket if she’s small, 2 of mine slept in them until 12 months (1 in bassinet and 1 in Moses basket), they were both tiny babies.

Firsttimemummy23 · 03/01/2023 21:01

Both myself and my husband did check and there's no straps I even spoke to my HV as I thought they might inform them and they were understanding - they said the only concern is that I left her alone for two mins but I just find that unreasonable! But I understand it's completely my fault and take 100% of the blame and I shouldn't let her alone.

No he wasn't English, I don't think he has kids or maybe he was getting confused with something else xx

3yo DD has been to A&E twice for a pulled elbow which were caused by DH and me accidentally. I was panicking the first time for the same reasons as you and spoke to my friend who’s a radiographer who works in paediatrics. She said the main things that ring alarm bells for them are delay in seeking medical treatment, change in story or inconsistent injury with the reported mechanics. You’ve none of those. I also contacted my HV the first time and we had a telephone call where she basically said she’d take a note of the discussion but from our previous dealings and hospital notes she had no concerns.

If I were you I’d be upfront about the fact you didn’t realise that the Moses basket/stand was so unsteady that she could tip it whilst just whilst turning over, but now you do the basket is gone and she’s in a cot/playpen. Realistically unless you were standing immediately beside the Moses basket there was no chance you were stopping it falling to the ground, so having left the baby (in what you thought was a safe place) for two minutes is unlikely to be material.
