Is it OK for my 8 month old to nap in the living room during the day?

I read that baby should nap in the same place she sleeps at night. My daughter only naps for half an hour unless I hold her. Believe me, I have tried every suggestion on the Internet to lengthen them and nothing has worked!

Anyway, I can get her to nap in her cot but it is a challenge to transfer her without her waking. The cot is an ikea cot bed with a high rail that doesn't lower, and I'm not the tallest person. Add in my c section scar that is still sore and it's a nightmare to hang over the edge of the cot as I slowly lower her down.

I have had success in tucking her up on the sofa and patting her to sleep. No lowering or transferring, it was pretty easy. But it's not the safest sleep spot, so I was thinking of using a nap mat or the mattress from our travel cot on the living room floor, so she'd be supervised. I figure she'll be napping at nursery soon so the rules about having the same sleep space won't apply, right? We don't have this problem at night, she is an excellent night sleeper. I can't lay her down awake during the day in her cot to avoid the transfer, I tried Ferber which worked great for night time but I don't see the point in putting her through those tears just for a measly thirty minutes!

@TheShellBeach babies shouldn’t be swaddled after 8 weeks, and you should stop before that if they are learning to roll. It’s a big risk for suffocation accidents if they roll and get stuck face down

LapinR0se · 03/01/2023 17:38

I know. Naps are a total headfuck

RandomMess · 03/01/2023 17:44

I would try taking them for a walk in the pushchair to see if they will sleep more than half an hour.

Do what works for you OP (except swaddling 🙄). I feel your pain as my 8 month old will only co sleep for naps, but also sleeps fine in their cot at night time. It's frustrating as hell but I've given into it for now I'm afraid.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 03/01/2023 17:46

Neither of mine napped in their cot in the day - I liked that cot signalled longer darker night time sleep.

Dc1 slept strapped into her stroller in a darkened room, dc2 napped literally wherever he was at naptime - stroller, on me, on the playmat, in the bouncer etc.

TheShellBeach · 03/01/2023 17:32

You can if they've been swaddled since birth.

I swaddled mine from birth. I stopped once they could roll - if they are swaddled how on earth do they roll themselves off their faces?!

CoffeandTiaMaria · 03/01/2023 17:50

DC1 napped on the settee or in the car, DC2 napped anywhere, including face down on the floor folded in two!

MyMachineAndMe · 03/01/2023 17:52

Mine used to nap wherever they happened to be.
Dc1 would sleep in the pram, and later the pushchair, in the kitchen if we were home.

Crying a lot before naps usually means a baby is overtired, undertired or hungry.
do you want help with the routine? If so post what happens on a typical day (including feeds)

She cries if I try the Ferber method or putting her down awake, otherwise if I rock her to sleep she's out within ten minutes.

I have never heard of that rule and my two slept wherever they slept.

Do what suits you.

LapinR0se · 03/01/2023 17:59

Yes so living room = rocked to sleep, bright environment, no cot, short sleep

cot = self soothing, dark quiet room, long sleep

those are strong sleep associations. If it’s working for you just keep going

Scarecrowrowboat · 03/01/2023 18:00

My 2yo still naps in the living room. It doesn't cause us any problems with night sleep.

Nosecamera · 03/01/2023 18:01

If you are alert and next to jer for the whole nap, then this is safe, it isn't safe if you are leaving her on a sofa to sleep unsupervised. If she is on you and you are awake then this is fine. Mine had most naps on me while feeding at this age. At nursery she will either be in a cot, in the arms of a staff member, in a pram or on a floor mat for nap times .

gogohmm · 03/01/2023 18:03

Don't think either of mine took a single nap in their cot, they barely slept at night in them either. Do what works for you

I hoped this would work but nope, I leave the house when she's due a nap so she's tired enough, I'll do an hours walk to the high street and she'll still only do thirty minutes.

Mine never sleeps in her cot for naps. She will literally nap anywhere I put her because I've done it that way since she was tiny. It's easier because I walk everywhere so she often ends up napping in her pram or if we are at someone else's home for the day she'll nap on the sofa or whatever🤷‍♀️ if both DH and I are at home for the day one of us takes her to bed for a snuggly nap (the best days 😂)

She only does half an hour unless I hold her. So she'll do half an hour in her cot or on the sofa or in her pram, but if I hold her she can nap for almost two hours. I've tried cutting out contact naps all together but it didn't help lengthen the naps.

LapinR0se · 03/01/2023 18:07

Sorry to ask but what times are the naps? And is she warm enough

Sounds like there’s literally no problem here, absolutely fine to need rocking to sleep. Hardly any babies will just go to slept left alone awake in a cot, it’s really not something they need and is based on very outdated baby advice - we know more about baby development and evolution now. Keep doing what you’re doing and don’t worry about the books, your baby doesn’t read them

BuffaloCauliflower · 03/01/2023 18:09

Contact naps are fine too, enjoy the chance to sit

BoringLittleMe · 03/01/2023 18:18

My Ds napped anywhere! Buggy, cat, jumperoo... We'd just leave him there if we could, like having the buggy in the hallway or whatever.

Enjoy the naps while you still have them. Gosh, I miss them...

BoringLittleMe · 03/01/2023 18:19

Cat?! 🤣 Car! We don't have a cat so I'm certain he never napped on one!

Pugletpops · 03/01/2023 18:38

She's asleep by 8pm and awake at 7.30am. Most nights she sleeps through without a peep but if she's teething or just fussy I get up to soothe her once or twice, it's really not that bad

converseandjeans · 03/01/2023 18:47

Could you put travel cot in dining room or lounge?

Mine always slept upstairs but I can't see an issue with the nap being downstairs.

You could also use buggy laid flat ?

SparkyBlue · 03/01/2023 18:54
