is there anything between a moses basket and a cot?

hi, i'm new to mumsnet so apologies if this has come up before.... my son is two months old and rapidly outgrowing his moses basket. We have a cot bed all ready to assemble in his room but want to keep him in our bedroom until he is six months. We're really going to struggle to fit the cot bed in our bedroom so I was wondering if there is anything intermediate - all the cribs and moses baskets seem to be the same size and then it's quite a jump up to a cot. Any advice appreciated, thanks!

There are cots of different sizes. We got a cot from Ikea which is a bit smaller than the standard ones. Check the cot measurements.

We have the same problem and we haven't found anything. Currently have ds in a travel cot but it isn't very comfortable for him or us. (sorry I can't help)

i would honestly scout out free-cycle etc for a cheap basic cot of this sort
mothercare version

This takes up no more room than a travel cot once assembled and could double as a spare later on if you have families staying

another vote for an ikea cot - they are really good - and we stored ours flat under our bed for 5 years, bought a new mattress and are now using it for dd3!

thanks for your ideas - dh is a freecycler and i've been checking ebay and gumtree too! Unfortunately ikea is a no go area for us after they messed up our kitchen but if they do smaller cots maybe there are others, i will look.

I'm at the same stage - DS is rapidly outgrowing his crib but we don't want to put him in his own room yet as it's on the floor below us. We don't have room for a cot in our room as it's in the attic and the sloping roof just doesn't allow for it.

Was thinking of getting a travel cot for the next 2-3 months, and using that as an inbetween bed, and then using it as a playpen downstairs when he can sit up.

Anybody else done this? Would it be a total waste of money?

NorthernLurker · 04/02/2008 16:40

a travel cot that folds away small is never a waste of money! We got ours from mamas and papas and it has been very good. Dd2 slept in it for holidays till well after her third birthday and we are using it now as both a travel cot and playpen.

the ikea basic cots are the smallest about ime... and exactly what youre looking for. might have to suck it down and revisit

oxfordkat · 04/02/2008 17:39

hmm, may be an opportunity here to get a cot as part of the compensation package from ikea

i wouldnt accept it if i were you, it only costs about 30 quid

send a MIL or someoen in disguise

oldnewmummy · 06/02/2008 09:26

We used a samsonite pop up travel cot for DS until he was about 5-6 months with a thicker mattress. No prblems, and VERY light. They only cost about 25 quid new, and you can usually pick one up on ebay.

mumzyof2 · 06/02/2008 09:53

Or a crib? We have one that is slightly smaller than a cot, and it rocks from side to side. However, my grandad made it for me when I was born as hes a joiner and carpenter, and now my children use it, so you wouldnt be able to buy one!
Ours is abit like this, but without all the frills!

oxfordkat · 13/02/2008 11:30

hi, thanks to everyone for your help. We got s crib from ebay which is just a bit bigger than the basket. Now have new mattress too so can see if lo likes it tonight! no ikea, thank goodness
