When to be concerned about baby's temperature?

Not sure if this is the right forum.

I have an almost 5 month old (will be 5mo on the 10th) with a nasty looking case of chicken pox. He's pretty snotty and miserable too. He's spent most of the last 24hrs sleeping (contact sleeping only. Send help 😴 😴) and if he's awake he's mostly crying and miserable. Wasn't drinking great in the morning but started taking full feeds again through the day. His temp has pretty much stayed around 38.5 all day with calpol. He's maxxed out on calpol now so don't want to give him anymore for quite a few hours and temp is still 38.5.
At what point should temperature concern me?

With the temp not coming down you could call 111 for advice

Hope he is feeling better soon 💙

Give him nurafen instead of calpol. I found it worked better at bringing temp down and if that doesn’t help, call 111.

Nurofen

NHS site says:

do not use ibuprofen unless advised to do so by a doctor, as it may cause serious skin infections

www.nhs.uk/conditions/chickenpox/#overview

Based on that I would call 111

Libmama · 02/01/2023 03:45

Don’t give nurofen with chickenpox!!!!

shannonlt · 02/01/2023 13:05

Don't worry I know not to use any kind of ibuprofen! I haven't called 111 yet as his temp finally came down a little on its own to around 38.0 without needing calpol. I have another question though if anyone thinks this looks infected or a normal pox? Right on his bum cheek poor thing! I'm a first time mum incase you can't guess that!

Poor baby, I'd suggest he needs looking at having seen those photos combined with the fact you can't get his temperature down. I've read that filling in the online 111 form gets a quicker response than sitting in the phone queue for hours?

His age and the suspected infection along with not being able to bring his temp down with Calpol really should get you an appointment.

If he worsens and is lethargic and/or not drinking, take him to A&E.

You'd have to ring 111 as can't fill in form for under 5. I would take to urgent care/ring 111. Defo no ibuprofen.

That definitely looks inflamed. I would get him checked out. Poor thing. X
