Clumsy toddlers?

DD1 is nearly 2 and has had a fairly bad cold for about a week, bunged up, snotty and had a high temp as well so I am assuming it is in her sinuses as well.
Her legs are absolutely covered in bruises from her tripping over her own toes (whether bare foot or in shoes), falling over toys, falling off steps she is used to (on slides etc) as her feet just don't seem tog o where she wants them to.

Could this just be because of the cold? I am pretty sure it is but I think I just want reassurance that colds cause clumsiness and it isn't anythign more serious!

Chirpygirl, I think it is an exceptionally clumsy age. They seem to fall more than they did when they started walking, probably because they are trying to do more and to do it faster. My DD (22 months) has fallen and bashed herself twice in the same place in the last weeek and now appears to have a black eye. The cold may well be contributing (query whether her eustachian tubes are affected and balance off)...

also i think growing a bit sends them bit off balance, their legs are longer. ds always fell over lots more on the flat than off things because he wasn't concentrating on where he was going.

Thanks for that, it's quite reassuring to hear!
She does seem to be abel to go faster than her mind can cope with as well IYSWIM. She tends to set off on a lurch and not be able to stop or aim properly at where she wants to go!

couldnt read and not say that yes it is a clumsy age but if you are at all worried, epilepsy is something that can have similar effect. and they can get worse when sick because of the fever which can bring on more seizures. dont want to worry you. I just always wondered about my dd who just didnt seem quite right [ couldnt put my finger on it no specific symtems] she always seemed a bit shaky but only really so I could notice and she fell alot but she wasnt walking yet and I thought it was just part of growing up. we found out she was epileptic and since going on meds is s different child.

hope i dont worry you... i just couldnt not say anything.

ChirpyGirl · 04/02/2008 14:20

thanks michtenstein, you haven't worried me at all, I did actually have that in the back of my head which is why I asked but am a bit more reassured by other clumsiness.
Will keep an eye on her once the cold has gone and if it carries on like this I will take her in, can't do any harm to have her checked over!

if bunged up she could possibly have an ear infection too which can affect balance

or it could be just natural toddler behaviour too

the bruising is normal

but you might want to get her ears checked just in case
