In need of advice on the best bunkbeds, whats better wood or metal? And where best to buy? Argos, IKEA or elsewhere?

Get the best you can afford.

If you can afford Stompa they are very good.

We have had two Flexa beds in constant use for 17 and 19 years. Over the years they have been L-bunks, high sleepers, and regular beds. They are still in use, only the mattresses have had to be replaced. I've offered 6'2" ds a new bed, but he likes his Flexa!

They were expensive, but were a very good investment.

We have stayed at places with bunks and our observations are:

Wooden bunks are quieter and more solid than metal, because you can tighten the bolts.

Flat slats on ladders are more comfortable for bare feet than narrow or round slats.

If you have the headroom, make sure that the bunks are high enough for an adult to sit on the lower bunk. If the ceiling is too low for this, get bunks that can be positioned in a L shape.

If you're investing in expensive bunks, get the sort that can become single beds.

Also, is it better to have the eldest at the top or bottom?

We started with the elder at the top. But he had gone from his cot straight to a high sleeper that was almost as high as the top bunk, so I don't see that it makes a huge difference.

On the other hand, one of our dc was never allowed to sleep in a top bunk until he was about 8 or 9. This was because he rolled around and flailed his arms and legs so hard in his sleep that he would fling himself right over any bedguard. It happened many times. We felt it was safer for him to sleep at low level until he outgrew this!

What happened in practice was that whenever one of the room-sharers was ill, they had the bottom bunk (easier to take care of them). After they got better the children sorted out for themselves who took which bunk.

We ended up with a high sleeper with a free floating need underneath. We had an odd shaped low ceiling so ended up with one work really convenient shelves. We prefer wood so went with that
