10 month old DD has croup and really sleepy

Is it normal for babies to sleep loads when they are poorly?
So DD has been unwell with a cough and cold symptoms since the 22nd. I took her to the GP on the 23rd who said she has croup and she had one dose of steroids. We took her to out of hours on boxing day as we were concerned about her breathing, it was really wheezy and they said upper respiratory virus and it'll go on its own. Yesterday we called an ambulance for her because she was really weak, bright red and boiling hot and we couldn't get her to stop crying. Her temp wouldn't come down after both ibuprofen and paracetamol. They took us to A&E and the doctor again said that it was croup and gave her steroids again which seem to have helped thankfully!

Today she is back to drinking her full bottles after being completely off them but all she wants to do is sleep, which is really unlike her! Up until today she had her x2 30 minute naps like normal. She isn't weak or hard to wake up or anything like that, just really sleepy. Is this normal?

Yes, it's 100% normal to be tired when they're ill. She just needs to recover her strength, but it's a good sign that she's having milk again.

You're doing the right thing by having medical intervention when she clearly needs it. Just let her rest and continue to offer fluids, and follow any other instructions the doctors have given

Thank you for your reply!
She's refused her third bottle which is a little worrying and then cried for about 40 minutes but I gave her paracetamol and she has perked up a bit. Hopefully she will take her bottle at bed time and has a good night.

Yes! My son just had a bad infection had high fever and had antibiotics. He was sleeping for 3 days after finishing his antibiotics course I was so worried aswell. But he was fine after 4 days back to normal. So don’t worry he will be fine just needs to rest his body

My son also had croup when he was 10 months old and had 3 doses of steroids. I actually went to the a&e for the 4th but it was just me being paranoid about his breathing when he was fine, they were very nice about it! Told me that I was right to check.

I can’t advise on your actual question about sleep, but I just want to say I know how scary it is! It all worked out well but I still remember that time with dread.

It is so scary! I've had a phone consultation and been back to the GP today and they probably think I'm being a panicky paranoid FTM but underneath DD's eye has been really red and kept swelling up to the point it was closed over but then goes back down again but it has remained red and swollen today. I mentioned this to the out of hours doctor and A&E doctor who both said they don't know what is causing it but it will go away on its own. I'm so glad I took her back because she has an infection which can be very serious apparently! It's so hard to know what to do and I feel like I'm pestering the doctors but I'm glad I did now.
