Itchy bum

Mamabear04 · 27/12/2022 17:48

My 3yo has been complaining of an itchy bum. She has very sensitive skin so I only ever use waleda wash when she gets her hair shampooed 1-2 a week. I've had a look and it looks a but red. Thought it might be worms but couldn't see any and she's toilet trained so I never get to have a close inspection of her poo. Any ideas what it could be or what I could do to help? I thought maybe some sudocream?

Probably is worms, I would treat her for them anyway it won't harm.

DontFeatureMeOnSocialMedia · 27/12/2022 17:51

Definitely treat for worms. My kids have always complained of itchiness before we have spotted the bastards.

upfucked · 27/12/2022 17:52

I third. Treat for worms.

Try and get her to poo in a potty, when ds was 3 he also complained of an itchy bum, especially at night, which turned out to be thread worms.
They're really common and easy to treat.

heidihigh · 27/12/2022 17:54

Ovex is very effective but make sure to treat everyone in the household as well as washing all towels/bedding/nightwear etc

speakout · 27/12/2022 17:54

Could be worms.
If you put her in a nightdress to bed, then when she is asleep gently have a look around her anal area with a torch.
Threadworms are nore active at night when they come out to lay eggs.

On the plus side they are easy to treat and not harmful.
Very easy to pick up in a nursery or school as children put toys in their mouths, chew on pencils.
You may want to check yourself- I found it best to treat the whole family if one of my kids ( and it happened a few times) had worms. Also put your child in pants to sleep to prevent eggs transferring if itchy.
Then put bedding, towels, underwear on for a hot wash.

speakout · 27/12/2022 17:57

Yes I agree Ovex is good.
Seems gentle on the stomach and no side effects.

I know it is gruesome, but worms are a constant problem in schools and nurseries- not serious and easy to treat.

Mamabear04 · 27/12/2022 18:17

I'm BF does that mean I can be treated too? And DS is only 5mo....

Dd sleeps with no pants but pj bottoms on. Ugh just what I need - loads of washing and no tumble dryer when it's cold and wet outside! Do I just need to wash everything once once then as normal?

Also feel so bad because I can't get to chemist before she goes to bed. Anything I can try to ease the itching in the immediate? She's had her bath but still complaining of being itchy

Yes, you can and you can treat baby as well. You'll technically need a prescription for the baby (my DD was about six months) but the prescription was for literally the same stuff

Darhon · 27/12/2022 18:24

Put pants on with her pjs/nighty. Get enough doses to treat once now and once in another 7-10 days. Check if your area lets you get the product for free as part of the minor ailments scheme.

Breastfeeding network says it is ok to take ovex whilst bfing
BFN info

Loafbeginsat60 · 27/12/2022 18:25

Pop some Vaseline on her bottom tonight and make sure she has a shower or a bum wash when she gets up and changes pjs daily.
Wash her bedding, towels and soft toys. Scrub her nails too in case she's been itching. You could wash bedding again in a few days just to be sure.

Treat everyone in the family with ovex now and in 2 weeks or they will keep hatching!

The chemist might say just treat once but it's always best to do it twice as their life cycle is a fortnight

You can check for worms by having a look at her bum once she's been asleep for a while.

If they are there I'd go over the area with a wet wipe to catch the fuckers and their eggs. Obviously she will need treatment as well.

YoBeaches · 27/12/2022 21:51

If she's toilet trained is she able to wipe properly - as any residue of poo will cause an itch.

Treating for worms is straightforward if the itch is mostly nighttime and waking her up. If it's all the time then might not be that, but good to rule out.

Mamabear04 · 27/12/2022 21:59

Just checked her bum while she was asleep and no sight of any worms at all. Should I still and treat her? She has been waking sometimes 3 times a night saying she needs the toilet but not sure if it's because she's worried of having an accident? Any other suggestions other than worms or does everyone think I should treat for worms?

MuggleMe · 27/12/2022 22:40

If the itch is inside anus rather than the cheeks, and complains more during the evening/night, definitely treat for worms.

Darhon · 28/12/2022 07:09

Honestly treat for worms. The itching after the bath and being disturbed at night are classic signs. Be grateful you didn’t spot a worm - I’m
still traumatised nearly 15 years on from checking my then 3 year old at night 🤣

calmholly · 28/12/2022 07:14

I agree, treat for worms. If you can't take over the counter medicine while breastfeeding you can take diatomaceous earth, I know some pregnant woman who've treated it with this. You can get it on Amazon and mix it in a drink.

RebeccaCloud9 · 28/12/2022 07:19

My kids have had worms a few times (when they were at nursery/preschool they were rife!) and I usually couldn't see them when I first checked. Every time they had those symptoms though, it was worms. They come out more at night so you could check when she's asleep. Or check again the next day. Or just treat anyway. In Australia (I think?! Pretty sure someone on mn told me that) parents tend to treat every 6 months whether they have symptoms or not.

mathanxiety · 28/12/2022 07:38

You need to treat everyone else for worms.

Then you need to boil wash all towels and mats in the bathroom, and scrub your bathtub. Also hot wash all bedding and iron your sheets if you don't have a dryer. You need to hoover all rugs and carpets within an inch of their lives, and mop all tiled floors. Boil wash the mop head if it's washable. If not just detach and replace.

When DD takes off her pajamas they need to be taken immediately to the laundry basket and placed gently there, same goes for knickers. Dont let her kick them off or fling them around. Her soft toys all need to be frozen for a few weeks.

Trim her nails and start a habit of using a nail brush daily. Everyone needs to get very serious about washing hands before eating and after coming in from outdoors.
