2 month old hasn’t discovered hands

Hello everyone

my DD is 2 months old today (yay!) I always check milestone pages and stuff to see where she is at. It says she should have discovered her hands by now but she hasn’t. She doesn’t grasp things or bat things nor does she even chew on them :( she also has quite poor head control. Tried to do tummy time, sling etc and she doesn’t like any of it

should I be worried? It’s Xmas eve and it’s all I can think about :(

You have to persevere with tummy time, its not a one off to see if she likes it or not, prop her up under her arms for a few times a day and she will develop the strength. Child development isnt linear

Milestones are a guide line, not set in stone.

I mean this kindly but step away from the baby books

Children develop in their own time. The next milestone she might hit a month ahead, then the one after right on time, then the one after a few months late. All normal.

stop worrying and go and enjoy your baby

The ages and stages questionnaires are the ones the HVs do.

It's about score for each section, it's jot expected your baby will do everything in each bit. I linked the 2mo one above. If your baby is failing to meet the milestones then mention it to your HV.

Thanks everyone. I know you’re right. It’s just when you see things like “if your child isn’t doing such and such by this age, speak to your dr” … makes me feel like somethings wrong :(

Also the ages and stages cover to the end of the relevant period, so this is up to 12 weeks. A lot happens in four weeks with baby development.

What?! At that age if you're baby is breathing and feeding there is nothing to worry about at all.

Try to be present and enjoy the little moments that you have that are pleasant. Enjoy the cuddles.

My god where is this written??

People would be down the doctors with small children every day at that rate!!!

Lindy2 · 24/12/2022 13:42

My DD slept for pretty much the first 3 months. She woke to feed but not a lot else.

Your baby is still brand new and tiny. As long as baby is feeding, sleeping and needing nappy changes then that's fine.

No body, adult, child or baby does new things at exactly the same time.

Mabelface · 24/12/2022 13:58

Just remember, babies don't read the guidelines. 😉 8 weeks is learning to feed, sleep, smile and enjoying cuddles. That's it. Just enjoy this gorgeous tiny phase because it passes in the blink of an eye. Merry Christmas.

No comment to help, but here is a kitten discovering it's got feet...

SilverGlassHare · 24/12/2022 22:14

I knew I had a video of DS finding his hands - I’ve just checked and he was 2 months and 3 days. Try not to fret, OP. Just keep an eye on your DC’s milestone but try not to obsess x

Thank you :) x
