When did you switch to a stroller style pram?

Currently pregnant and starting to look at what we need for the baby. Had a look at some prams and I’m really stuck. We were going to go with something like the Cybex Priam or the Uppababy Vista but the handful of friends I have who have had babies said they switched to a stroller once the baby was a bit older as the prams are just too heavy for daily use.

This has made me think if I need to buy a big (expensive) travel system in the first place if it won’t get a lot of use. Wondering if this is the case for most people and you moved onto something smaller?

In which case I’m thinking the Bee 6 as it can be used from birth but it’s a bit lighter and smaller. Also planning on using some sort of sling for walks etc when baby is small.

I just had the one pram, with the carrycot when they were newborn. Also used the sling until around 2.

AmIThatMam · 22/12/2022 07:57

I wouldn’t bother with a travel system. People who carry the car seat on their arm must have some sort of super strength! I just couldn’t get on with it. We were loaned one by a friend for this baby as we had sold the old one years ago. I was so glad to but her in a stroller at 6 months! I did have a bugaboo with my middle child which was a happy medium x

Cantbebotheredwithchores · 22/12/2022 07:58

I didn't, I used my travel system till she was 3.5 for long journeys.

I haven't found my Priam too bulky at all. You can easily take the seat off if needs be too. It's great for country walks and so sturdy. Also very comfortable suspension for naps. I'm sticking with it and pregnant again.

If you like the Uppababy Vista, they have just released a new lightweight city version called the Minu. I LOVE my Vista and we bought it as we are hoping to use for a second child as a double, but seriously considering buying a Minu as well as we live in London and the Vista is big on public transport. The Uppababy bassinet and a car seat also attaches to the Minu but you have to buy it separately.

ChristmasCakeAndStilton · 22/12/2022 07:59

I think it depends on your lifestyle.
If you live in a city centre, and are going to be using public transport a lot, you need something small and easy to fold.
If you live a mile down an unpaved track, and walk everywhere, you probably want something a bit bigger.

Personally, we didn't use the travel system bit - DS woke uncliping the seat, so we just transfered him. We borrowed a pram with a carry cot bit for a few months, then moved to an umbrella fold when he was about 5 months.

Cantbebotheredwithchores · 22/12/2022 08:00

Also I found some of my friends prams had a lower weight limit than mine. When I looked into the travel system I bought went up to age 4 apparently

megletthesecond · 22/12/2022 08:00

Never. I had a 3 wheeler from birth all the way through to pre-school. I always walked though. It never went in the car.

QuiltedHippo · 22/12/2022 08:01

We got a stroller at 8 months when we went abroad, we switch between both that and the main pram now at 20 months. I do love the big basket on my uppababy.

We got the uppababy from FB marketplace for £60 and its been fine. I'd have been gutted to spend as much as my first car on a shiny travel system when we used a sling so much and she hated the bassinet. I'd also rather pick a car seat based on safety ratings than just go with the one you get with a travel system

Rayna37 · 22/12/2022 08:01

I bought a lightweight stroller for holidays but barely used it. I loved my ICandy peach travel system and used it until my son didn't need one any more!

I will add, I had an estate car and rarely use public transport though! Depends where you live.

Lots of friends did move to a stroller though.

gogohmm · 22/12/2022 08:03

Personally I would buy a from birth compatible buggy from the start, my pram was very lightly used!

Cantbebotheredwithchores · 22/12/2022 08:03

My mam has stroller for hers and when I've pushed other peoples I've found them not a easy to steer or push. As other people say it depends on your lifestyle. Our nearest public transport fits our large buggy as it's a metro style. Ive I was city centre living and needing an easy folding pushchair mine wouldn't be suitable.

WooWooWinnie · 22/12/2022 08:04

We have an uppababy Cruz and we love it! We had the bassinet originally but our baby very rarely slept in it so we switched to the pushchair with a newborn insert (she’s small for her age) when she was about 4-5 months old and she much prefers being strapped in. We still kept it quite reclined until she was about 6 months and now she sits up more. You could use the newborn insert from birth and keep the pushchair horizontal and then you wouldn’t need the pram basket, but our DD was 6lb at birth and I think she would have been too small.

Alarae · 22/12/2022 08:04

I bought a secondhand Maclaren stroller when my DD was 2, as we were going away on holiday and wanted something that was cheaper to take on the plane.

The switch was great as she was outgrowing our initial travel system anyway and it was smaller and didn't take up as much room.

whatthejuice · 22/12/2022 08:06

Congratulations!
We've had the Uppababy Vista since my eldest was born. Youngest is now 21 months and will definitely be using it for another 6 months or so.
At that point we may sell it and switch to a lighter weight, more compact stroller, as we're not planning any more children. I will miss it's storage under the seat though!
I haven't found it cumbersome to use - but maybe that's because I live in a smaller town rather than a big city, and don't use public transport?

Iizzyb · 22/12/2022 08:09

I loved my travel system when ds was small. It was so easy to push and he was so comfy in it. I swapped to a maclaren buggy when he was 18 months old (before the summer) but I bought one with a very big hood which kept the sun off him much better as he's so fair. Loved both of them. Used the carry cot top in the house a lot the first few months too (born late Oct so got the full benefit of being wrapped up/snuggly in the carry cot).

Friend with an Vista only ever used that for her 2 dc's.

PuttingDownRoots · 22/12/2022 08:12

Had a big 3in1 system (carrycot, seat and adaptirs for carseat) and an umbrella stroller. The umbrella stroller was used for buses and holidays. The bigger system was used on the daily long walks (plus fitted the buggy board!)

The travel system was retired when DD2 was 4yo, it went to a dog shelter to rehabilitate abused dogs scared of children.

Mummyboy1 · 22/12/2022 08:14

It really depends on your lifestyle , where you'll be using it. For me I use it in mixture of town and country, so I like my biggish wheels, although I do wish it was lighter getting in and out of the car! But I still love to have him facing me and at that higher height.

Plazaheart · 22/12/2022 08:15

Thanks everyone.
It’s so helpful to get other opinions. We live about 5 miles from town, but I rarely use public transport and nearly always drive. Walks would be mainly on paths wouldn’t imagine going anywhere off road. Should mention too I was planning on actually using a car seat on the pram, we were looking at getting a fixed one in the car.
Do people find them easy enough to lift in and out of the car etc? When we were in the shop the only one I easily managed to lift was the Fox 3 , and I thought I was quite strong 😂.

We still use the big pram every day (six years in, three kids). The toddler goes in the seat, the preschooler goes on the buggy board and the big one "scooter surfs" off the side.

Foldable pram was useful when we only had DC1, from about 8 months til birth of second child.

PurpleBananas22 · 22/12/2022 08:32

I had the Uppababy vista and loved it so much!! Absolutely wonderful and used it everyday until my kids grew out of it, probably about 4 years old. Even then I still took it on long walks or shopping trips because it was handy, just in case.

I tried an umbrella fold up buggy, because lots of people used them. And I hated it! My Vista was big, but lightweight and a joy to push around. Fold up buggy's are tiny, rattling and not a joy to push!

Stick with the vista 100%

yikesanotherbooboo · 22/12/2022 08:32

I wouldn't bother with the car seat bit , they are heavy and the baby can only be in them for a short while.
If you are doing shopping etc and on foot a lot you might be grateful for a big basket and good suspension but if you are going to be driving a lot or catching buses and using a sling you might hardly use a bulky pram taking up a lot of space in your house and car. Lifestyle is the key factor , think about what your life will look like as best you can. With my older DC I lived in a city centre and did my shopping on foot so I used the bigger pram/ pushchair for 18 months or so . By the time we had DC 3 we were much more car dependent and moved to the umbrella fold at about 8 months as it was light and small to throw in the car and easy to manage t whilst wrangling the baby or other DC.Having said that , the larger pram lasted for the three DC so from that point of view we got value out of it.We bought generic rain hood and cosy toes thing to save money .

We brought the egg2. Perfect from birth until they grow out of needing a pram. We are constantly travelling and often in London and we’ve never any issue with using the tube etc. I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone fold up their buggy on the tube 🤨 they have areas designed for wheelchairs and buggy’s!

personally strollers look weak and uncomfortable for the baby imo. I have a 15 month old and if he falls asleep in the buggy then I can lay him down and I know he’s comfortable and cosy. Where as yes strollers may be more ‘convenient’ for the parents but I’m not sure why that should take priority over babies comfort…

AegonT · 22/12/2022 17:45

We had a second hand Bee+ for DD1. We used it from birth to 3.5 then again when DD2 was born. This time we have also bought a very cheap and light Joie travel pushchair for times even the Bee is too big or heavy; days in London, holidays, when I've given a friend a lift and needed room for their pram in the car. It doesn't drive a well as the Bee though and doesn't parent face.

Inthesky42 · 22/12/2022 19:29

Vista is the absolute best pram ever. The comparative comfort to push it and the enormous basket space and big wheels mean it's a dream for you and the baby. I still use mine daily for my nearly 3yo and 17mo as a double, it's the best double I've seen as you can fit it through doorways etc there is no compromise! I never used a car seat on it (they don't recommend newborns are in the seat any more than 30mins) but the bassinet was big, really comfortable and my babies loved sleeping in it, so much so that we ditched the moses basket and used it for overnight too! I also have a lightweight travel stroller (cosatto woosh3) which gets used for the nursery run to fold up small for the pram shed but imo any stroller is more rattly, less comfy for baby / you and far more fussy about terrain (my uppababy has been on woodland tracks, muddy paths, sand, snow, it just 'deals'!)
