Lip balm for 2 year old

Might be a very silly question 🙈 DSs lips are getting SO dry from the cold weather. Are regular lip balms fine for young kids?! It’s not really something I’ve ever thought about until now 🙈🤣

is there something specific I should be using?

Vaseline is fine even for a newborn so should be ok for a 2 year old

pimlicoanna · 21/12/2022 13:02

Vaseline

bakewellbride · 21/12/2022 13:02

Vaseline.

Agree vaseline (petroleum jelly)

Patty101 · 21/12/2022 13:11

I use Nivea Original Care lip balm on my kids. I find vaseline is OK at preventing chapped lips in cold weather but once they're already dried out Nivea lip balm seems to be the only thing that gets the moisture back in them.

If you happen to have any left over from breastfeeding, the Lansinoh pure lanolin stuff is amazing lip balm. It's fine if even newborns get it in their mouths, so obviously safe for toddlers too. I think they even sell it in a lip balm type tube, as well.

@89redballoons @Patty101 Sorry, I should have mentioned all that 🙈 I have been using Lansinoh on him before we go out as a bit of a barrier but it doesn’t seem to be doing much to help actually moisturise them! I wasn’t sure if Nivea etc would be suitable or if I would need something more natural. Burts Bees might be ok too actually?

I'd try putting it on in his sleep as well as before you go out. The problem with sore lips is that licking and sucking them makes it feel better temporarily, but children end up sucking all the lip balm off and the saliva irritates their lips more. If you can get a good layer of some kind of protective barrier on at the start of the night, that might give his lips a chance to heal a bit and break the cycle of sucking/irritating/sucking.

Source - I have the world's most sensitive lips, and used to get big, red sores and scabs around my lips every winter until I was about 14 and finally developed the self control to stop sucking them 😳

Weleda have a baby winter skin balm (very high in lanolin but sinks in more lansinoh) it comes in a yellow metal tube - my kids lips and faces get chapped to pieces in the cold weather and this makes the difference

MsSquiz · 21/12/2022 21:07

My dd has just turned 3 and she uses a burts bees lip balm before she goes to bed every night in the winter.

She also has hydromol cream for her cheeks at the time of year which definitely helps soothe them and reduces the redness but she doesn't like that on her lips

Choconut · 21/12/2022 21:18

Make sure she is properly hydrated then she won't have so many problems with her lips. I definitely would be putting a by product of crude oil (petroleum jelly) on her lips.

I wouldn't put anything on there that isn't edible as the chances are she'll lick it straight off. I'd try olive oil.

Choconut · 21/12/2022 21:18

*wouldn't

Ocrumbs · 21/12/2022 21:21

Don't try burts bees it's not that great.
Dr bronners do a baby lip balm that worked well for dc

ChateauMargaux · 21/12/2022 21:25

I would also steer clear of vaseline. (but clearly among the minority)... I am in the 'never put on your skin something that you wouldn't put in your mouth' camp. Shea butter, cocao butter.... burts bees is OK as is weleda skin food lip balm.

Madamecastafiore · 21/12/2022 21:51

There's a special Weleda balm for little ones, fab for wind chapped little faces, doesn't sting and is a bit lighter than Vaseline. I think it's called wind & weather balm. DD is 9 and still uses it as she hates the thick feel of lip balms or Vaseline.

RewildingAmbridge · 21/12/2022 21:58

Lansinoh worked for DS but only if I put it on before he went to bed, during the day he just licks it off

Ohchristmastree311 · 21/12/2022 22:49

Thanks all 😊 I always put a decent bit of moisturiser on his face before bed and always use Lansinoh before bed too as it inevitably just gets licked during the day, but it doesn’t seem to be making a huge amount of difference. Will definitely have a look at all your other suggestions too 😊

@Choconut Hes definitely properly hydrated, thanks.
