Babies on bikes

On their parents' bikes, not their own, obviously!
DH has just found pictures of the Dutch Bobike which attaches to the handlebar instead of the one I've seen at Halford's etc where the baby sits behind the adult and he really likes the idea. Has anyone used it?
Does LO need a helmet, presumably, but can you get tiny helmets?
How do you feel about the kids being in a trailer behind the bike? I think it might be nicer for them in the rain with the cover on but how safe are they in the road?
Opinions and experiences welcome, thank you

oh luminous how dreadful for you... that's exactly what I'd be frightened of as I know that I couldn't trust myself not to think 'oh, it'll balance just for a second while I get something'. fingers crossed we're going to get cv's bobike mini - not sure how I'll feel about careering through central London traffic with it though!

NOT all trailers are equal. I have a CTS one with push chair handle, so its about 4 foot tall at the back. and very noticeable.
Wriggley toddler on a bike seat and nervous cyclist is not a good combo.
For both bike seat and trailer use a kick stand on te bike is a good idea, for a bike seat I'd look at a two sided kick stand so the bikes not leant over when you load child into seat. for a trailer a simple one is fine just watch out for the slope your parked on.

Had a child seat. Hated it, never felt stable and did drop the bike once when DS on it (and millions of times with seat empty - those things are unstable)

Recently got a trailer and I adore it. It's a Burley Ladybug and I'm very happy with how well I can be seen. Get one with a safety flag. It's a bit scary crossing roads, but I'm super super cautious about everything.

Trailer also transports all the stuff and allows DS to play with things in it and be protected from the weather. And if the bike tips, the trailer doesn't. Love it.

There are a couple of gaps I can't get through, and it is a little heavier to pull, but not much more than a child seat. Plus you get extra kick on the downhill sections.

But if money were no object or if I did a lot more cycling, would love a Bakfiets or similar so I could see DS while riding and have proper conversation.

does anyone know if the bobike mini fits on a suspension bike?

Nappyzone · 15/03/2008 19:41

We have a trailer and used with dd from about 8 months when could sit up unaided. She loved it and in with her teddys pritected form the rain. We liveon a v large estate and used it mainly on cycle paths to get round my mummy friends without dragging out the car. Its a raleigh something which turnns into a stroller also with a wheel you attach to make a 3 wheeler. I cant wait to get it out again butmy new bike has suspension front and back and im not sure if i can use with that if anyone knows.....

fixing trailer to bike with rear sus- if you have the kind of hitch that needs a fitting on teh rear axle- Yes. if you have a clap on to chain stay type.. maybe depaend son teh bike, OR you may be able to order a rear axle type hitch to use with that trailer instead.

Bo-bike mini with sus bike- teh clamp thing goes on teh stem imediatly below the handle bars, so all depends on how much stem you have.
The front sus forks themselves shouldn't be an issue
