Baby Carrier - what am I missing?

Hello! I’m hoping there’s a really obvious answer to this and I’m just being daft.

I had used a stretchy wrap from birth with my baby but I wanted to ‘upgrade’ so went to our local sling library and borrowed a Beco Gemini. It’s great, but…

Is there a structured baby carrier that you don’t have to take almost entirely off (minus the waist belt) and remove your coat for every time you put baby in it or take baby out? Sling library is closed for Christmas so I will ask them in January but I’d love to know now in case I can get one in the Boxing Day sales. Am I just using the carrier wrong? Any tips?

Thank you!

Hi, I've not used the Beco Gemini, but I use the KahuBaby. I found a YouTube video which showed me a couple of ways of pre-wearing it before putting the baby in. You might find some helpful YouTube videos to see if there's a similar method that works with the Beco?

With the Ergobaby Omni 360 you can loosen the straps to get baby out, without taking the straps off

I just used to wear a wrap (or any other type of carrier) over just st a t-shirt. I could then add layers of hoody/cardigan, coat etc over the top so I could take them off without disturbing a sleeping baby.

Similarly baby was dressed in day clothes and I just did my husband's fleece up over both of us so if they fell asleep I could get them a safe temperature without disturbing the sling

The Baby Bjorn One has clips at the front. You attach the carrier to yourself with a back strap and shoulder straps (like a back to front rucksack), then fasten the clips to hold the baby securely onto your front.

We have one and my DH uses it with DS quite a lot, but we both find it hard to get a comfy position. It feels like it's designed for someone who is over 5'10 with no boobs/waist

I'd definitely recommend trying it out before buying one!

I had a Beco Gemini and loved it. Yes you have to take the straps off but I don't remember it being often I needed to. They were generally in it for a chunk of time for a walk or a nap or an alternative to the buggy so there wasn't a lot of taking them in and out in general.

I have a baby wearing coat which I really recommend (or you can just wear something oversized). My baby is zipped in with me so stays cosy, then I can take the coat off when we go indoors and we're both still in appropriate clothes.

PeanutButterFalcon · 21/12/2022 14:55

@FrizzledFrazzle we have 2 of there’s and find them both so uncomfortable but love being able to clip it on and off.

I now have the ergo baby 360 and it’s so comfortable but awkward to put on and off

BlandSoup · 21/12/2022 15:05

Don’t you put your coat over the sling? So you just take coat off and not the sling when you come in. If on your front, that doesn’t work on your back.

SuburbanMummy123 · 21/12/2022 15:09

I also completely agree that it’s easier to put baby inside your coat. Remember that your coat plus your body heat are then 2 layers of warmth for baby so you don’t need to go crazy layering them up in clothes, and can just take your coat off without disturbing baby when you go inside. At first I used husband’s big coat, then invested in a babywearing/maternity/3 in one Seraphine coat with the removable panel (which I still wear 2 years later, without a sling)

ZacharinaQuack · 21/12/2022 15:11

We had Zip Us In coat panels that you can zip onto your normal coat to fit over the baby carrier.

Try a ring sling, you can loosen and tighten that without taking it off.
But otherwise, it's pretty much only the baby Bjorn "One" and the Najell Easy carrier, which is similar, which allow this, and neither are built for women's bodies!

Yes put the sling inside the coat. If you have a maternity coat that often works or if you can borrow a man's coat (or even charity shop one) since you won't need it for that long and the proper babywearing coats are very expensive. But doing this means you don't need a separate coat for the baby, which can make them bulky in the carrier.

I haven't used the Beco carrier, I have a feeling from memory that it works a bit differently to other carriers. But the two I use most commonly (Boba Air and Angelpack) I can loosen the straps to get the baby in or out and keep the sling on. It's a bit unwieldy doing this but less annoying than taking the whole coat and everything off. If there are rucksack style straps, then tilt the bottom of it and it will allow the strap to run freely through to loosen. Then pull the tail to tighten. You would generally loosen from the shoulder straps, and then tighten once baby is in.

BertieBotts · 21/12/2022 15:35

One tip I did learn when working at a baby shop is to fully loosen the arm straps, but fasten the chest clip (that's on your back when you're front carrying), then lay the carrier flat on a surface in front of you, such as changing table. Place baby in, lift front of carrier up and around them and pop the chest clip over your head, then wriggle your arms in, and then tighten.

Once you get good at this method you can often put the carrier over your head without baby in, but loosened, and add them in afterwards. That means you can keep your coat on.
