Newborn throwing up alot

My son has just turned 4 weeks old and has been vomiting after feeds for around 2 weeks now and it's progressively getting worse.. he bringing up quite a lot of milk every time he's sick (not like spit up its alot worse) and it has been projectile quite afew times to the point where he's choking on it because it's coming out of his nose. It's harder at night time as he seems to struggle on fluid/sick when I lie him down even if I've tried winding him kept him upright for feeds and then for 30 minute after it still seems to happen.. yesterday he threw up 6 times within 10 minutes again not like abit of spit up it was quite alot each time the last time was just watery milk as if he had emptied his stomach. He is EBF so I feed on demand he continued to throw up after his feeds yesterday I rang 111 for advice they told me to take him to a&e which I'd rather not put him at risk of catching anything as its flu/rsv season I've spoke to my health visitor and midwife's multiple times I even had to take him in the week before as he was sucking his stomach under his ribs after projectile vomiting afew times and every one just keeps telling me "it's normal it's probably just abit of reflux" especially as he is still gaining weight no one seems to share my concerns.. Has anyone experienced anything similar as I don't feel like it's just reflux due to the amount that's coming up and how often

That sounds quite extreme and I would definitely be going to a doctor if not a paediatric gastroenterologist. It might be pyloric stenosis or it could just be severe reflux. CPMA can also present like that. Either way you can get help and treatment.

The HV came out today and said because it isn't projectile every time she doesn't think it's pyloric stenosis and the paediatrician checked him over last week and because all his obs came back normal they sent us home and said he could have a viral bug because he was also having green/mucusy nappies (they lasted just over a week but have just cleared up but the sick is getting worse) she also mentioned the CMPA but because his skin is clear and I dont really eat dairy she's not 100% hence why they just keep saying reflux

Reflux and mucous poo sounds very very much like CMPA to me. My baby had it and her skin was perfect

My son had this, and turned out to be Pyloric Stenosis. He needed surgery at 8 weeks old. Get it checked out asap OP. The hospital and GP's here kept fobbing me off saying it was reflux, eventually a young junior doctor at a&e pushed for an ultrasound (against the advice of the consultant) and they found it.

HaggisWurst · 19/12/2022 15:52

It could still be cmpa, op. It has many different symptoms. My DS had it, his symptoms were constant screaming, sore tummy cramps. My friend's little one had it too and he only had one symptom - throwing up after every fed. He wasn't in any distress with it either, no rashes.

Are you breastfeeding or formula feeding? If bf - I'd recommend you give up all milk products for 6 weeks (although you should see a difference before then. It takes 3 weeks to leave your system then 3 weeks to leave theirs. I started to seeing a dramatic decrease in crying after around 2 weeks with mine and by 4 weeks, his crying stopped completely. With my friend, the vomiting got better after a week and then also stopped completely after around 3). If formula feeding, I'd try your best to get dairy free formula and try that for 3 weeks. At least this way, you can rule it out if it's not that.

Oh no I bet that was hard to watch your baby suffer and be told he's fine☹️ thank god for that doctor who found it! What were his symptoms that made you think it was more than reflux? I feel like I'm not being taken seriously as he's my first baby but he already suffers with polycystic kidney so I'd hate for anything else to be wrong for him but I just have a gut feeling it's more than reflux.. it's so horrible seeing him be sick so much

My DS had bad reflux, he was being sick constantly. But it was never “projectile” or had any force behind it, it was just like milk overflowing from his mouth.

So what you’re describing sounds quite different to my experience of reflux but others may say differently.

I've already stopped drinking/eating dairy I don't really have that much anyway just abit of milk in a brew.. Im breastfeeding so would rather not have to give up and just change my diet instead and hope this helps

There is force behind the sick it doesn't just come out and he seems in discomfort from it unlike reflux where it just comes up and baby seems fine.. like just now I had put him down in his crib for a second and he started choking on what was trying to come up but I have to help him get it up sometimes as he sounds like he's struggling on it☹️

Would put money on it being CMPA. My dd would projectile vomit almost every feed.

NameChangePoP · 19/12/2022 16:17

With my DS he was sick after 99% of feeds. But he projectile vomited - it went surprisingly far!
Pyloric Stenosis is more common in boys than girls, and the projectile vomiting is a symptom. He was still gaining weight though, albeit slowly, which is why they were so sure it wasn't this. They put him on 2 different medications for reflux which obviously made zero difference and I just kept going back and being firm.
Stick to your guns OP, trust your instinct because it's invariably right.

Fingers crossed for you you get some answers. Just to add as well, even a small bit of dairy (like milk in tea) can cause it. I've learnt the hard way that even a small slip up can cause the symptoms again. So it really has to be zero milk products to see if it makes a difference.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 19/12/2022 21:56

Have you checked your baby's body/skin? Last year mine had redness under the arm and was vomiting. Was admitted to nicu as baby had infection. Four days in hospital on iv anti-biotic and anti-viral medication.
Listen to your instinct.

PritiPatelsMaker · 19/12/2022 21:59

I've got CMPA and have clear skin. It could be non-ige CMPA.

Ducksurprise · 19/12/2022 22:00

I'm not saying this is the same for your child but my youngest projectile vomited for years, but as he was my youngest I was more confident in my decision. He gained weight, had wet nappies, was bright in himself so whilst I told the HV I didn't worry. Still is sick.

Amyjay19 · 19/12/2022 22:10

@Mumtobabyhavoc I've just given him a bath and can't see anything on his skin he's just extremely unsettled and has been for afew days, I know babies cry but this is constant inconsolable crying not like his usual cry the only time he's not crying is when he's nursing he won't even sleep much unless I'm holding him but even then he's still fussing ☹️

OP posts:
AmazonPrim · 19/12/2022 22:29

Please get him checked out for Pyloric Stenosis as others have suggested. My DS had this and ended up not being able to keep anything down. I was so worried he would become severely dehydrated. They admitted us into hospital and we stayed for 5 days (I had to syringe out the contents of his stomach through a tube down his nose because he couldn't even keep saliva down for long without vomiting) until they found a bed for us so they could do the operation. After the op he was totally fine and very hungry. He would have died if it wasn't discovered and corrected with surgery.

Bundle up baby; pack supplies; food etc fir you, too; and go to hospital. Start a list of symptoms, etc and when everything started. You won't relax until baby is assessed. I wouldn't.

Any temp? Even liwgrade? Mine just got over a virus and only had .5c increase in temp, but was not feeding well for a few days, so that was enough to indicate feeling quite unwell.

Amyjay19 · 20/12/2022 13:31

@Mumtobabyhavoc his temp seems ok I've had the midwife out today for my last check up asked her about the sickness and shown her how much he's bringing up she seems to think it's ok and to ask the docs for gaviscon for him

As long as you are reassured. 😊

Beanbagtrap · 20/12/2022 19:48

It sounds like FPIES. Might not be dairy causing it, I'd do a food diary and see what allergens you're eating a lot of.

Gem123J · 20/12/2022 20:13

My DD had bad reflux, and was also lactose intolerant. She projectile vomited a few times too, I remember she had a bad one when she was only 2 weeks old! Doesn’t matter how long I would wind her after a feed she would still vomit even a couple of hours later. But because she wasn’t losing weight the GP was reluctant to do anything about it, however, I persisted and saw a lovely Nurse Practitioner (NP) who prescribed Infant Gaviscon when my DD was maybe 6 weeks old and it made a huge difference! My daughter was like a new baby! I just explained to the NP how much distress it was causing my DD and she was very sympathetic and agreed it wasn’t nice for her to be going through that several times a day, every day.

By the time she was prescribed Gaviscon she was on formula then, I just found it easier with these lactose drops she was having for the intolerance but Gaviscon can be given while bf too, by spoon I think but it’s explained in the box anyway!

Good luck, I know how hard it is. We rarely left the house for weeks because there was just constant vomit!!

Amyjay19 · 20/12/2022 22:04

@Gem123J that sounds exactly like my son even if it's not straight away it will come up curdled an hour or so later and every time he's being put down in his crib he's sick which makes getting any sleep is hard as I'm so paranoid he's going to choke on it ☹️ I know it may not seem like a big deal to most but watching him struggle and choke on it daily is so sad i feel helpless.. I'm reluctant to go straight to giving him medication as he is so little and new (I'm also not a fan of taking anything medications unless it's 1000% necessary and no other natural remedy) but if it will make him feel better I might have to trial it. I've already started to cut out dairy from my diet to see if this also makes a difference 🤞🏻

OP posts:
Gem123J · 20/12/2022 22:18

Cutting out dairy will hopefully help 🤞 and although it doesn’t seem like there’s an end to it at the moment it will get better. You do what works for you and your baby and baby will eventually grow out of it. But of course, if you’re ever concerned don’t ever hesitate to contact GP or HV and get a second opinion if you’re not sure.

It’s heartbreaking seeing them isn’t it. People just say that all babies do it, that they all spit and to wind them and bla bla bla but it’s no where near as simple as that! I can’t begin to count how many times a day I would have to change my DD’s babygrows! Never left the house, well for short walks but that’s it. The vomiting was constant! I also ended up starting baby porridge when she was 18 weeks. Would have liked to wait longer but she was much better after slowly introducing food. I know your baby is 4 weeks old but the weeks will fly by so plenty of cuddles, you rest while you can also, and things will get better! I’m hoping your baby will get better asap 🤞🤞
