What are you dressing your baby in to go outside in this weather?

When I went out this morning it was -1 degrees and I think I vastly underestimated how cold it really was because my baby screamed at me loudly the entire time we were out, I came home as quickly as I left because she was inconsolable but she was fine the second we stepped back inside which tells me she was probably cold which I felt awful about.

shes 9 months old, I had her dressed in a long sleeved vest, tracksuit bottoms and a jumper, socks, a winter coat, a hat, a blanket and her cosy toes. I felt like this was enough but is it maybe not enough? She will not keep gloves on for longer than a second so maybe cold hands are the culprit, I have a pram suit on the way with gloves attached so she can’t launch them, but just wondering what everyone else is doing. Thank you!

Sounds like enough to me but you know how it feels for us even when walking about in this weather, before long you feel chilled to the bone. Even under blankets etc we’d feel freezing sitting still I’d imagine. I’d imagine you’re right about the hands and possibly toes - you could get some thick socks, like welly socks kinda thing. Things made of wool are good, cardis socks etc. And the suit with gloves sounds a good idea. You could consider thermal base layers, there’s a website muddy puddles that I like who have a sale on just now. But any layers are the main thing I think. Mine at that age would never stay in the cosy toes, always kicking legs out.

Nipped out for a bit and it was minus 5.
16 month old was wearing long sleeved vest, tights, a jumper, thick fleece dungarees, cardigan, socks over the tights, shoes, thick coat with hood up and a hat, plus mittens. Then the footmuff over her up to middle. She was warm but not boiling.

Mitts are a must, under coat is a way to stop the getting them off or even in a pinch socks on hands up the arms then the coat on.. absolutely no way of getting them off then. I think you could do with another layer on the legs, pop some tights under the trousers maybe.

@Beginningless yes that’s very true. I find it hard because I run really warm especially since giving birth and being on some of the medication I’m on, I actually got too hot walking with her today! Thank you so much for the suggestions they’re so helpful!

@SpiceRat thank you so much, this is so helpful to know! Definitely going to layer up next time. I think I’ve scared myself with not wanting her to overheat but this was definitely a lapse in judgment today, she was not pleased bless her

Mine was in a long sleeved vest, babygrow, socks, cardigan, snowsuit, hat and blanket when we nipped out and seemed ok. We have a coldish house though and she doesn’t seem bothered. I was also boiling walking her in hoodie, coat, hat and gloves so know what you mean about feeling hot!

Sprogonthetyne · 15/12/2022 16:47

Mines bigger now but I used to love having baby in a sling under my coat on cold days. You share body heat so both end up super toasty.

ToddleToddleToddle · 15/12/2022 16:54

You know those summer short-legged bodysuits? Using that as a vest with tracksuit and long sleeved top, thick jumper plus coat hat and blanket. Need to find a way to keep his little gloves on now...

And short journeys outside until the snow goes!

Ewanismydreamsheep · 15/12/2022 17:01

My 11 month old was in a short sleeve vest, long sleeve tshirt, leggings, thin Christmas jumper and thick winter coat. She also had 2 blankets under the cosy toes and a hat under her hood. It was -6 when we left for the school run and she was warm but not boiling. We were out for about an hour and she wasn’t cold at all

ForgetBarbie · 15/12/2022 17:10

If they’re in the buggy do you not put the rain cover on them whilst outside? My kids will be warm without it and only their face is a bit cold. However because it’s been soooo cold recently I’ve had the rain mat on them. Keeps them nice and toasty

A padded snowsuit keeps them cosy in any weather!

It's -5 in the mornings here and only just up to freezing in the afternoon.

I've experimented a bit and do either LS vest and tights, with merino all in one over that, (or merino babygro with trousers and LS top over) then a wool jumper and thick wool socks, balaclava, gloves, hat/hood and thick pramsuit.

Layers are key and if possible wool rather than synthetic. That's hard to find though - I knit my own as most stuff you buy is from acrylic. It's not cheap but Dunnings deliver merino stuff quickly.

Dillings, not dunnings!

Before they were walking mine didn’t have coats or outdoor wear of their own. On the very cold days they would be wearing their normal indoor wear, with a hat and cardigan added, maybe some leg warmers to go outside in, then they’d share my coat.

When they were walking, the fleece suits with no feet were good. Hat underneath. Extra pair of socks or tights on under for cold days.
