Reusable nappies at night

Richtea67 · 15/12/2022 05:45

Want to give these ago as my dd soaks through at night, tried all brands and sizes and have heard reusable nappies are good for keeping lo dry. For night use how many nappies, wraps, boosters would be needed, and any particular brands recommend? We are on a budget, but happy to spend if it's going to do thr job! TIA 😊

We can see this thread is slightly old now, but if you’ve landed here looking for sustainable nappies, we’ve recently updated our best reusable nappies page with plenty of great options for night time tried and tested by real parents. We hope you find it useful.

Tots bots bamboozles. They are the two part night version.
You need nappy and wrap. And some bamboo extra boosters inside for super wetter

They have 60% off atm, so only about £6 for bamboozle

We had 4 night nappies, and 2 wraps. That was enough to wash every other day, as the wraps are virtually dry coming out the wash. ( and we used the tots bots easyfits daytime so had full load then).

If your only using at nights I would suggest 5 night nappies and 3 wraps ( wash every 3 days). The nappies can go in tumble dryer, but we usually just dried on airer.

we have just the plain version and white wraps ( as they were always cheapest, and colours don’t fade).

If you're outwetting disposable nappies then you really need the big guns of reusables, bamboozled won't be absorbent enough, you will need a lot of boosters. Baby Beehinds night nappies are the most absorbent although very expensive. You will need at least three but more like five to account for drying time between washes. Then a waterproof wrap over the top. You could try buying just some boosters and wraps and adding these to disposables to see if that helps before forking out lots?

Little Weeds hemp boosters can be hard to get hold of but are brilliant for night time if you can find them!

AegonT · 15/12/2022 21:17

Another vote for Tots Bots Bamboozles. They go 12 hours for us. We have 4 as they dry slowly. 4 wraps (Motherease). 4 fleece liners Not using extra boosters yet but if you got hemp ones then just one per nappy; they can go between the nappy and the wrap if they are too big to fit inside.

Skyla01 · 15/12/2022 21:20

We use a disposable nappy with totsbots wrap over the top (use reusables mostly in the day time).

Caspianberg · 16/12/2022 05:15

Ds was a heavy wetter 5-8 months approximately. Never had a leak in the tots bots bamboozles

Richtea67 · 16/12/2022 13:33

Thanks all...have ordered some tots bots bamboozle with the wraps and some boosters. Do you just chuck them in with normal laundry? Presumably if it's a pooey one need to soak or something first??

As @Richtea67 - you use a fleece liner. Hold liner in toilet and flush the majority poop. Then in wash.

I always wash nappies at 60, cotton wash. No rinsing or soaking or pre wash

Jalla · 17/12/2022 07:50

I didn't like bamboozles - really don't get the fuss about them, and they have a microfibre core which isn't as absorbent as cotton or hemp. When doing reusuables overnight I used Ella's house bumhuggers and Bells Bumz hemp night nappies, with motherease airflow wraps or reusuabelles breeze wraps. Having said that, eventually I moved to disposables overnight and resuables only during the day as I got fed up with needing ever more absorbent night nappies in new sizes, and after trying a few brands found disposables that worked overnight for us (naty eco worked for us. Pampers was the literal pits!)

Richtea67 · 21/12/2022 08:28

So we've tried the totsbot bamboozle for the last couple of nights from 10pm until morning. They haven't leaked, but in the morning the nappy is soaking wet and cold and her skin has felt cold and clammy. Does that sound right? My dd has been quite wriggly in the early hours and I'm wondering if she's uncomfortable. I didn't use the extra fleece booster as she looked so bulky! Would that make a difference? Or is that just how reusables are?

Decafflatteplease · 21/12/2022 08:31

You are best to use the fleece next to the skin as it pulls urine away from the skin.

We used either tots bots like you or little lamb bamboo. With 2 little lamb triple layer bamboo boosters. One in the nappy and one between the nappy and the wrap. What wrap have you got?

Have you used reusable in the day?

Decafflatteplease · 21/12/2022 08:34

For a washing routine, we used cloth in the day aswell plus cloth wipes and cloth pads for periods etc. I store in a "wetbag" basically a large waterproof bag. Sometimes I'd rinse the night nappies in cold water just in the bath if they were particularly wet. Then every few days put everything in a cold rinse in the washing machine. Then a long wash at 40 with normal non bio powder and a scoop of tots bots nappy wash. Then a final cold rinse to get rid of any detergent residue.then hang to dry.

CatWithKittens · 21/12/2022 09:54

A 75cm Terry padded with a 60cm one will soak up a 9 year old's overnight output in our experience when used with old fashioned plastic pants. When he was younger we used 70cm ones. (Some that size are made by BrightBots and are fairly easily obtainable.)

showmethegin · 21/12/2022 09:56

We use reusables and we found that the bamboozles were so bulky with the additional boosters that they were disturbing his sleep. We now use a hemp booster inside a pampers with a waterproof wrap over the top

Caspianberg · 21/12/2022 11:47

Yes you need to add fleece. The fleece isn’t a booster at all, it’s very thin layer that allows the urine to pass through so nothing wet against skin. Plus the fleece allows you to hold and flush just that part of poop on ( not flushing fleece away)

Itstarts · 21/12/2022 11:59

Good ol' Terry nappy and a decent wrap is your best bet.

Richtea67 · 21/12/2022 15:13

Thanks all...it looks like not using the fleece booster may be where we were going wrong then. She's going to be so bulky with all that, but we'll try that tonight. If this doesn't work may do the same as @showmethegin and try the booster in a resuseable with wrap on top. Or give the eco naty nappies a go. Who thought it would be so complex!

OP posts:
Caspianberg · 21/12/2022 15:33

The fleece honestly makes no difference to the thickness.

Its fine to be bulky though. It’s for sleeping and no waking up soaked. Ds wore bamboozles at night from 2months-2 years, and still managed to climb out his cot at 17 months so didn’t hinder his movement at all. It’s actually very good for hip development

HouseOclock · 22/12/2022 19:56

Can you show a pic of what you mean by a fleece booster? You get fleece liners which are paper thin and offer no absorbency at all and are purely to keep moisture off baby's skin, or a booster that will be thicker but is absorbent and 'boosts' the absorbency of the nappy but won't necessarily keep baby's skin dry

Caspianberg · 23/12/2022 06:13

Fleece liner should be like this, not a thicker booster

www.totsbots.com/product/fleece-liners-10-pack-

As baby drinks less and eats more, generally they wet less overnight and you can then stop including booster also.

MassiveSalad22 · 23/12/2022 06:28

With my eldest I did bamboozle, hemp boosters and wool wrap. But his bum was then so big it was utterly ridiculous and restrictive. I persevered for ages through the guilt of the evil disposable but used disposables at night after a year or so and at night from the beginning for my subsequent 2 kids.

Richtea67 · 23/12/2022 10:50

@Caspianberg and @HouseOclock these are the boosters I have...maybe a fleece liner would be better? We abandoned the totsbots last night as with the insert she looked uncomfortably bulky and her hips were in a really unnatural position. She also seemed to be very wet, not leaking through but soaking against her skin. @Caspianberg I'll try those fleece liners instead, thank you.

@Richtea67 - yes I not think they are liners you have, they are additional boosters. So will be bulky if your adding those as well as the normal nappy
