Gave baby honey - help!

Tonight I wanted to do a treat for my DD1 (5) and said we do a picnic inside for tea. I went to the shop and got smoked ham thinking it wasn’t honey roast ham so my DD2 (8 months) could have a little ham sandwich. It wasn’t until she was eating it I panicked and checked the ingredients and smoked ham has honey in! So annoyed with myself for not checking before giving her it! Any advice on what to do?

Can babies not have honey?!

Hercisback · 10/12/2022 19:56

Chill. This really is a non issue.

enjoyingscience · 10/12/2022 19:56

You don’t need to do anything - the honey in the ham will be cooked, and the risk of botulism is absolutely tiny, please don’t worry

Since when has honey on the no feed list ?

ScreamInBlue · 10/12/2022 19:58

Honey?

waitingwaitingwaiting2 · 10/12/2022 19:59

@slowquickstep its there on the bottle, babies under 1 shouldn’t have honey. I believe there is a risk of botulism.

For years
Theres a small chance of infant botulism which is why honey isn't recommended under 1 year

MillyMollyManky · 10/12/2022 20:00

It’s cooked, don’t worry.

In plenty of other countries honey is considered safe after 6 months, we are just super conservative about it. The chances of your 8 month old contracting infant botulism from a trace of honey in some ham are so minuscule that they are not worth devoting any brain space to it.

NotMyDayJob · 10/12/2022 20:00

It's been this way for quite a while now, certainly when DD5 was a baby.

Cooking doesn't kill the botulism thats why it shouldn't be given to babies at all.

Foreveranxious22 · 10/12/2022 20:16

Thank you everyone! I’ve dissected her little finger sandwich that I gave her and it looks like she just ate a bit of bread but it hard to tell if she actually ate the ham before I took it off her🤦🏻‍♀️. I’ll monitor her over the next few days. I’m a bloody idiot

A long time! until they're one due to botulism risk

sidesplittinglol · 10/12/2022 20:21

There's probably nothing to worry about as you said she may not have eaten any after you checked the remains. But if you want to be on the safe side and to calm your nerves you could either have her checked out, call 111 or give it up to 36 hours to see if she has any symptoms from it. I'm sure she's fine x

dementedpixie · 10/12/2022 20:24

Unlikely to have an issue with ham that has a minute amount of honey in it. Just avoid giving honey itself. I wouldn't be phoning anywhere about ham she may or may not have eaten

RunLolaRun102 · 10/12/2022 20:30

The botulism risk isn’t for British honey. But with honey many manufacturers aren’t transparent about where they get their honey from - there’ll just be a ‘mixed eu and non-eu’ notice & much of it comes from India where food born botulism cases that require hospitalisation are rare.

Op they'll be fine. The amount they would have eaten is minuscule

"But if you want to be on the safe side and to calm your nerves you could either have her checked out, call 111 or give it up to 36 hours to see if she has any symptoms from it"

Shitting hell no wonder the NHS is on its knees.

i really don’t mean to sound harsh, and as a parent myself to a near 1 year old I know how stressful it can all be, but you need to get a grip because this is a non-issue.

Again, I’m sorry to sound harsh but it really won’t have caused an issue. You didn’t give her neat honey or anything like that, it will be absolutely fine.

Agreed. It's honeyroast ham not neat honey. It's been cooked..

Proseccoagain · 10/12/2022 21:41

And I used to give DS (born 1979) honey and brown bread sandwiches for tea when he was a baby. He's now 43, and as far as I know no harm has come to him from being fed honey at such a young age.....
