Sending child to school with strep symptoms..

Hello,

Just wanting some perspective on this. In my child's school the class have done their Christmas performance and one child had clear sore throat, muscle aches, sneezing, washed out and fever.

Parent had admitted they'd been to doctors and received penicillin for this but didn't want child to miss performance. Am I right in thinking they're massively in the wrong for this?

Thank fully my DS is fine and the parents are split between this being okay and others not agreeing.

What's your view?

Supposed to be off for 24hrs after first dose on Abs I believe.

RememberedForAllTheWrongReasons · 10/12/2022 16:00

Are you saying they’re received a diagnosis, and penicillin, for Strep or that they are unwell with some similar symptoms and are on antibiotics for it?

Beyond selfish!😡

You shouldn’t send a child to school with a fever.

spidereggs · 10/12/2022 16:02

Don't agree, same here.

Child given antibiotics and steroids Thursday even last week, back in Friday, mine now been sick for a week.

From what I can gather, GP given ABX and not confirmed if it is but erred on the side of caution

There is a parent like this in every school. There precious little baby couldn't possible miss out on play/party/trip etc.... and doesn't give a shit that they spread all the germs to everyone else.

Its the height of selfishness, and yet they don't seem to care as there baby gets what they want and fuck everyone else.

Witchofthedales · 10/12/2022 16:13

Selfish, more like the Mother didn't want to miss out, the child probably felt like crap and didn't want to be there, not to mention spreading a nasty infection around just before Christmas 😡 Parents like this piss me right off.

Otterseatpuffinsdontthey · 10/12/2022 16:14

Parent should have "erred on the side of caution" too!

DigitalGhost · 10/12/2022 16:18

Parents like this really pissed me off. Happened last year with chicken pox sending kids in before they'd scabbed up so they didn't miss end of term parties. My kid was sick the whole holiday. 😑

lunar1 · 10/12/2022 16:24

I don't know what it is with the fucking 'Christmas performance' at primary schools. You can always spot the ones who shouldn't be there, whose parents should have known better.

It's like all common sense leaves their head when it comes to their children missing things. The rest of the class then end up sick for the holidays.

Balloonsandroses · 10/12/2022 16:25

Depends. If they’d had 24 hours or more of penicillin, fever had settled and they were just left sneezing / washed out etc then fine.

if still feverish or less than 24 hours from starting antibiotics to treat strep not fine.

GAH3 · 10/12/2022 16:53

I think they're supposed to be ok to go back after 24hrs on antibiotics (it they feel well enough). Had the child been on them for 24hrs?

Jules912 · 10/12/2022 16:54

Depends, my DD has had an awful cough for over a week following an illness ( not strep), she's back at school. The child in the OP really didn't sound well enough even if it had been 24 hours though.

loz12345 · 10/12/2022 16:55

We got told by dr 2 weeks ago that once they had 24hrs of antibiotics as long as they felt well they were ok to go to school - we got them on a Fri and he was back at school Monday

MajorCarolDanvers · 10/12/2022 16:58

If the child is feeling well and temp has gone then back to school.

MelchiorsMistress · 10/12/2022 16:58

If the child has been on the antibiotics for 24 hours then the parent did the right thing. Without knowing how long the child has been on antibiotics you are wrong to assume the other parent is wrong.

anyolddinosaur · 10/12/2022 17:09

If the child still has a fever and is sneezing they probably have not been on antibiotics for over 24 hours - or they are not working. Child should not have been in school with those symptoms, they should have been home.

MajorCarolDanvers · 10/12/2022 17:32

one child had clear sore throat, muscle aches, sneezing, washed out and fever

Quite a diagnostic to make from the audience at a Christmas show.

MadameMackenzie · 10/12/2022 23:59

You're probably right OP but I still can’t help wondering how the heck you could tell a kid had a sore throat? I can’t even tell if my own kid has one until she tells me!

I agree there's a parent like that in every year but not because their child is too precious for them - sending an ill child to school is the opposite of that. More like not wanting the child at home no matter what.

SequinsandStilettos · 11/12/2022 00:08

Official guidance is 24hours after antibiotics - boom! - back in.
This is straight from the doctor's mouth.

OhChristmasTreeOhChristmasTreeFaLaLa · 11/12/2022 00:17

If they had antibiotics they can return 24 hours later. My son was unwell for a couple of days last weekend and then had a sore throat, I didn't even keep him off once he perked up. It probably was strep as scarlet fever and impetigo are going around the class. As he'd perked up I didn't have the time or patience to try and get through to our GPS, a couple of parents tried and got nowhere, as he just had a sore throat by then I just sent him to school as he seemed better.

Thing is this strep throat and other infections caused by the bacteria are very common they aren't a new thing. IGAS the invasive version of the infection which makes people seriously unwell as the infection moves to the bloodstream is very rare, it's just that there have been a high number of cases/deaths early on in the season. 2017 there was a high number of child deaths too but no one was made aware.

Dinoboymama · 11/12/2022 00:34

If the child was that unwell the school would have called home they send kids home if they have fevers in school.
Maybe the parents had given 24 hours worth of antibiotics already meaning the Child is allowed back. My kids have had performances half lots of kids in their classes have had it recently I'm expecting it anytime now.
I'd send back if no fever and 24 hours since that and antibiotics had been given if they were well enough.

This.

There was one who did this all of the time in my DC’s reception class. Spread the vomiting virus around the majority of the class the first time. 😫 Didn’t stop there though, and frequently brought the obviously ill child along to birthday parties, school trips etc. Would even say “oh, you’re really not feeling well today are you?” to the DC. It used to really piss me off!!
