Preschool lunchbox newbie help please!

I can't believe I'm doubting myself on this but it's amazing how being a new (ish) parent saps your confidence isn't it?

DD starts preschool in the new year. She is a very fussy eater, we are slowly but surely improving her range in a no-pressure way. Luckily her 'safe' foods include plenty of good stuff and her main issues are that she doesn't like much meat or veg and she doesn't like stuff in sauces. I'm currently working mainly on expanding her veg that bothers me more than the other things. Has a vitamin supplement and is all on track for growth etc, generally very healthy and energetic.

So for her lunchbox which she will have until if/when she expresses an interest in school food, these are the things I have available to choose from. Will any of them be a problem either logistically or be frowned upon?

Cheese & crackers
Humous and bread sticks
Bread and butter/bread roll and ham. Definitely NO sandwich though 🙄 might occasionally be a wrap.

Fruit- probably one berry and one non-berry, or should I just stick to one? I don't know what they have for snack yet.

Dry cereal as the sweet thing- she likes Shreddies and Cheerios. She also likes rice cakes, are they taboo?

Yoghurt- how do I do this without giving her food poisoning or using a tube that will be hard to open? She likes 'grown up' fruit corners but also likes the Aldi custard pot things. And Greek yoghurt with a bit of baby fruit pouch swirled in 🤷‍♀️

She quite randomly really likes mini quiches that I make, and also sausage rolls. Are they a bit over the line of acceptability?

She loves water so thankfully no worries on that front. I know I used to refuse my lunchbox as a kid and it did me no good so I'm treading a fine line between what's allowed and what I know she will eat to keep her going til pickup.

All of those things seem fine. Of course rice cakes aren’t taboo. For the yogurt, decant into a plastic tub that’s easier for her to open if you like and just pop an ice pack in an insulated lunch bag.

It sounds like you have some great ideas!

can you include an ice pack in the lunchbox to keep the yoghurt fresh?

NuffSaidSam · 08/12/2022 20:53

It all sounds fine to me.

Make sure if you're sending grapes/apple you cut it into small enough pieces that she/someone else can't choke on it.

I'd send her in with a squeezy yoghurt or not at all, it's probably a bit messy and not really needed.

If she doesn't eat any veg, I'd do two fruits, otherwise I'd add a veg.

Thanks all, good to hear I'm not straying too far (I've seen the stories on here about the lunch box police 🙄)

I'll explore yoghurt options- she would eat the baby pouch ones too I'm certain but the lids are a pain. Might get some frubes or similar and see if she can do them!

Also be prepared for some food refusal. My LO (also fussy) would eat only cucumber, peppers, avacado and beetroot as veg and I would always send in a little yogurt pot, she stopped eating these and would say they are 'yucky' (a word we don't use) so I can only imagine other children said things too.
