Too cold to venture outside?

Hi everyone, first time mum here!

Just wondering what everyone’s opinions are on when it’s too cold to take baby out? My LO is nearly 9 weeks old and the temperature seems to have dropped rapidly recently. Me and other half enjoy taking him for walks in his pram but I’m too worried about him getting too cold and getting ill? Help put my mind at rest please, I don’t know whether to stay in completely with him or go out and layer him up (but then how many layers are too many?!?) … 😣😣🤯

I had no issue taking my baby out in all weathers. Wrap them up, use natural fibres not acrylic and polyester as to me that’s like wrapping them in sweaty cold cling film. I found a sling helpful as she kept warm on my body with a big coat round us.

People have babies in much colder climates than the UK and they are fine, Danes leave their babies out in the snow to sleep!

You don’t have to go far the first time, maybe more to test out challenging your anxiety about it more than anything.

Look at what they do in Scandinavia... babies nap outside even in winter.

They are fine outside if wrapped up warm... just make sure you don't overheat them (overheating babies can sleep longer whereas cold ones cry)

When Ds was younger one layer more than an adult would wear was the rule of thumb I remember.

snuggled up warm in the pram they will be fine, just remember to take off a layer or two if you go into a cafe or shop or something.

Have you got a sling/carrier? They stay so snuggly against you and you can go out in all weather

Herbie0987 · 08/12/2022 08:31

I used to put a hot water bottle in the pram to warm it up, then leave in near their feet to maintain the warmth.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 08/12/2022 08:32

I had mine in a short sleeve vest, long sleeve top, wooly jumper and some joggers in the pram then I put a blanket over him then I put the rain cover over to keep heat in but I would let it off every so often to let fresh air in.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 08/12/2022 08:34

Also you can get these cosy bags for the pram to put them in. We have that for our double buggy and they are nice and cosy in there with no need for a coat. I like that better cause I always think they look like Michelin men that can move in big puffy coats.

KangarooKenny · 08/12/2022 08:35

When it was this cold I’d bundle them up and put the rain cover over to keep them warm.

Admittedly I talked myself out of going for a walk the other day :D

But going out in the fresh air is good for brain development and nighttime sleep, so do it as often as you can with lots and ots of layers. Even short bursts of 20 or 30 min is fine, then come back in to warm up

I'd take him out, but not like the baby I saw this morning. I'd just arrived at the shops, at 9.15am, and heard a baby crying. She was in a buggy, with a blanket, but no mittens or hat, just a loose hood on. She looked 2-3 months old. Her fingers were bright red, obviously cold. Her parents both had hats gloves and scarves on. My car was telling me it was -2 degrees outside. I hesitate to suggest this, because I'm a great Grandma now, and advice changes, but when my babies were small we were advised to pull the top blanket up to just above the nose, so the baby was breathing in warm air. Babies were put on their sides then, though, so I'd hesitate to do that when the baby is on his back.

frenchie4002 · 08/12/2022 12:28

i’m with the pp on the sling suggestion. I take my 7 week old for walks all the time and she stays nice and warm with my body heat and coat around her

mynameiscalypso · 08/12/2022 12:30

I think the danger is more that people wrap babies up so much when it's cold that they get overheated. I definitely remember taking my DS out the pram/his blankets in winter and finding him all sweaty. Babies are a lot more hardy than we give them credit for!

Greyphoto · 08/12/2022 12:33

100% go and add layers that can be removed easily like blankets if they get too hot. They can’t get cold/flu from the cold (or wet hair this is a bug of mine) you have to come in contact with Bacteria / viruses.

gogohmm · 08/12/2022 12:40

Babies in the high Arctic go outside wrapped in furs.

As long as they are suitably dressed there's no too cold in the U.K.

FictionalCharacter · 08/12/2022 12:40

Babies are fine outside in cold weather if they’re wrapped up warmly. His body temperature won’t drop and you can’t get ill from breathing cold air.
