Milestones in 6 week old

Hi people!

when did your little one start to discover their hands and any tips on how I can help my LO? She’s only 6 weeks and 2 days but doesn’t grasp anything or seem to have discovered her hands yet.

Honestly I feel 6 weeks is still like a newborn. My baby didn’t even start to attempt to grab with meaning until 12 weeks at the very earliest! Put baby on one of those mats with the hanging toys and try not to stress about milestones at this early stage, baby will find their hands in their own time

Juicylychee · 07/12/2022 21:03

Just relax and enjoy your newborn.

Absolutely agree with this. 6 weeks is so tiny, they just eat, sleep and poop at that age.

6 weeks is still a newborn to me although I know that’s not the technical definition at that age. This site tells you what to expect at each age.At 6 weeks they’re not really doing much.

hollyjolls · 07/12/2022 21:24

I think it was at least 3 months old when he started to hold things I passed to him.

Floydthebarber · 07/12/2022 22:22

Yes, at least three months. I think their hands are still balled up in a cute little fist at six weeks.

Floydthebarber · 07/12/2022 22:25

For play at six weeks, try singing to them, stroking soft toys gently over their cheek and hands and holding things for them to look at. That's about it. And think minutes before their are just ready for a quiet hold again.

Deegibx · 07/12/2022 22:25

Thank you everyone. Would this be the same with eye contact, is it too early?

cestlavielife · 07/12/2022 22:26

Way too early. Wait to 3 or 4 months

Fleur405 · 07/12/2022 22:26

I can’t remember when my little one discovered her hands but it definitely wasn’t 6 weeks. It’s normal for them to have clenched fists for quite a while.

cestlavielife · 07/12/2022 22:28

Please have a chat with your hv. Abput what to expect.
Do you have any reason to be anxious about milestones? Eg premature or difficult birth or family history?

Numbat2022 · 07/12/2022 22:30

At six weeks babies are basically potatoes. Needy potatoes. Definitely too early to worry about milestones.

Haha I used to call DS a screamy potato! He’s a lot more interesting now at 4.5 months

DuvetQueen1 · 07/12/2022 22:55

Try and enjoy them at each stage OP, they grow really quickly.

Gently, is there any anxiety here? I don't think many 6 week old are doing anything more than sleep and feed

PeachyMama · 07/12/2022 23:04

DS1 is 15 weeks and has only recently discovered his hands. If I pass him things he holds on to them and tries to bring them to his mouth (and fails) so don't worry I think your LO at 6 weeks has a while to go yet and all babies develop at different rates. Mine started smiling sooo late compared to what I read online I was so worried but he smiles all the time now

Have a look at the wonder weeks app

All babies are different /)

Deegibx · 08/12/2022 11:03

Thank you everyone xx

@cestlavielife not as such, I just checked an app for what milestones I can expect each week and it said they should grasp toys etc :(

@DuvetQueen1 yes, very anxious. Doesn’t help that her eye contact has been a lot less this week lol

Numbat2022 · 08/12/2022 11:16

Are you sure it said six weeks and not six months? A six week old definitely wouldn't be expected to grasp toys.

Babies can't really see much when they're tiny, it's all blurry and they can only really see very close to them (faces at feeding/cuddling distance). They also can't see colour at six weeks.

Which app,
It isclearly incorrect

check on any nhs web site and ask your h v for reassurance
Whrn you go for vacvine get a longer session for a check and get information from Your h v or g p

It is important ypu tslk to gp or h v aboutthis anxiety
Because it will interfere withyour interaction with baby

At six weeks they will grasp things that you put in their hands as they are unable to let go! Definitely delete the app, the NHS one is reliable for things like this.

I do miss tiny babies, enjoy the cuddles!
