Son (3) constantly ill

I struggle with anxiety and panic disorder so trying to calm myself down ..

my little boy started day care for the first time around 8 weeks ago and has been poorly pretty much constantly for the last 6 weeks. He’s had 2 chest infections that causing vomiting from coughing fits - needed inhalers and 2 courses of antibiotics. He’s also had 2-3 colds and must have a temp on a weekly basis.

He has thrown up tonight now and I feel so worried how often he’s poorly.

Anyone else find this happening? My friends either have much older children or none at all so I can’t chat to them!

Yep, I’m going through this with my 3 year old. We shielded from she was around 8 months old so this and added to this year there being more viruses being around its hard work. Although looking back I’m sure it was similar but not as bad with my older girl at this age - she had been in childcare from the age of 1.

I remember this happening to my dc and friends children when they first started childcare at whatever age that was. I also think children born in covid times have not developed immunity to the normal day to day bugs.
It will be a tough time until his immune system gets up to speed but in the longer term he does need this to avoid serious illness later.

It's a bad year for it: 2 years of little mixing and low rates of common illnesses (colds, coughs, sickness bugs etc). Everyone has to build up their immunity and young children have a low starting point.

It sucks but there's no getting round it. I've got 3dc (eldest is 6) and there hasn't been a week since September when one of them hasn't been off ill with something.

Yes! My 3yo dd started pre school in September and has been sick more or less back to back since she started. She has a really bad cough and fever atm and missed preschool this morning, she had only been back one day after being off for a week with a different bug. She’s missed more days than she’s been in.

This happened to my DS when he started at nursery. He was constantly ill. It was terrible.

He’s older now and honestly I can’t remember the last time he was off from school ill, but it was years ago.

If your DS is prone to upper respiratory tract infections, maybe speak to your GP about staying away from dairy.

This is normal I’m afraid.
It continues at school and can be worse at the end of terms when they are tired. And at the start as kids return and they are exposed to new bugs.

ForeverTired89 · 05/12/2022 22:46

Sounds normal to me. My DD started in September and has had a sickness bug, double ear infections, colds, coughs and just got over hand foot and mouth. It’s never ending.

Thank you everyone, it’s a rough time for them isn’t it. It’s such a scary time with the strep a news too! 😔

This is normal and it's also a bad year.

I know how you feel I also struggle with anxiety. My eldest (now 5) gets very sick with everything and often ends up in hospital with breathing issues. I'm currently having a massive stress about Strep A.

There's only one way through it... and that's through it. Apparently it gets better when they're 7.

Yep! Lo started childminders in April and since being there she's had what seems like loads of colds (although sometimes it's teething, she gets snotty, cold like when teething) chicken pox, HFM, sickness bugs and covid!

Before starting the childminders she was never ill as she was home with me for the first 8 months then the next 8 months with my husband so she wasn't really exposed to anything so this was probably a big change for her with things going around
