At what age did you let your kids out unsupervised to the park or to look around local shops please?

I think it's totally dependent on where you live surely? I don't live in the U.K. and my kids are much more independent than same age kids in the U.K. because where I live is safer. Even within the U.K. it would depend on area

Mine are 8 and 10 and I don’t but we live in a rough area

My 8 year old doesn’t even though we live in a relatively safe area and he can get to a local shop into crossing one very quiet residential road, but that’s because he’s afraid. I think maybe age 9-10 I will start encouraging him to do small time out alone- a walk to the local shop and back for 10 mins. I think by 10 they need to be moving towards being able to do some time outside alone to start getting ready for secondary age when most kids walks to/from school independently of parents.

Year 6 at Primary seems normal here, so age 10-11, with friends, not alone.

My thoughts are exactly this!

Summer between y5 &6 we started to let them play out. Then they walked to school independently and home in y6.

Now y7 is home and out again! Back by half 6 though. Will be later in summer.

We've a park very close and friends' homes and a few shops. Village. They mostly ride bikes or go pokemon hunting!

My kids are tiny but I started doing this around age 7 or 8. It was a small village in a very safe area and I was always with at least one friend of the same age and often a dog or two, though admittedly the dogs were small!

We moved to our current location when DDs were 8&9(nearly 10). School and shop both within a few minutes walk. They could go to the shop straight away together and elder DD could go to school and back by herself if she wanted. When younger DD was 9 she could go to the shop by herself. In Yr5, she starting go to school and back by herself... shes pretty much the only one in her year though. I picked her up on choir nights fir now as its dark.

Elder DD hangs out with friends... but younger DD doesn't as no one else does! Hopefully will change in the summer.

My 8 year old gets to go around our very small rural Scottish village with his 6 year old brother. They have gps tracking/ phone watches . They go to the park with some other children there age. Park is about 100m from the house.

I was thinking of getting something like this for my 8 year olds next birthday - which watches do they have? Thanks!

Year 6, age 10-11 here. Kids walk to school and back alone or with friend. Walk around village with friend or play at park with friend. Tracking apps and mobile phones help. Freedom then ramps up further once at high school.

With my DD it was year 6,aged 11. That's when she and all her friends started walking to school without parents, going to the park etc.

MyMachineAndMe · 05/06/2023 07:42

We aren't in the uk, but in sydney.
My DS started walking to school alone at around 8yo, and similar age for a walk to the cafe at the end of our road for buying me a coffee and him a cookie during lockdown, there were no roads to cross though.
We also live opposite a large park where he has been going with a friend since about 9.

BobShark · 05/06/2023 10:09

I will also say, he just moved to a prep school (yr 5/6 only) and most kids are either walking alone or taking the bus from surrounding suburbs.
