Hi, new on here and really just looking for some advice.
Basically my 13 month old son seems to get a rash around his mouth and sometimes an unsettled tummy when eating types of food. I think tomato based food 🤔 but also some dairy types too but honestly I'm not 100% sure.

We cut out carrots when he first started weaning as he was in so much pain tummy wise then done a poo and was like allergic to the poo as his bum was red raw and he was in agony.

We switched from formula to cows milk when he turned 1 but he cried in pain afterwards with a clearly sore stomach so we went back to formula then we gradually tried cows milk but he still wasn't right so back on formula just now (he has one bottle at night and one cup during the day).

I phoned my health visitor at the time and she basically said don't know what's wrong put him on oats milk. I said what about toddlers milk and she just said we don't recommend that. When I first phoned I spoke to my doctor it was the receptionist i got who said it has to be the health visitor i speak to.

I'm just wondering do you think I could get some sort of allergy test for him? I know it's not extreme allergies but something is clearly bothering him but I don't know what. Also does anyone know why oats milk was recommeneed over toddler milk?

Just really looking for some help, I'm a first time mum and just feel a bit clueless. Thanks for anyone who has taken the time to read all of this!

Yes there are allergy tests. This isn’t a job for the HV, your GP needs to refer you to the allergy team.

You need to emphasise the immediate rashes and that you require a referral.

My ds had a tomato intolerance at a similar age. He’s now 11 and can eat cooked tomatoes. Also citric acid also used to cause a sore bottom.

You are not clueless, by the way, you sound totally switched on and doing all the sensible things.

Oat milk can be a good option for some kids. Make sure you get one that says enriched or fortified.

You are doing fine. You are aware. My DC had an allergy to most foods at that age and tomato did the same to mouth as did chicken. I pushed at the docs as they dismissed me.

Then she had a bad reaction and they referred her to allergist. She had eczema that looked like burns and all sorts of other things like tummy pain, leg pain and hives or blanching with certain foods. Each reaction to certain food was different.

She had bloods done at about 12mths old. Sky high Immunoglobulins (from memory) and they did a skin prick, which showed allergy to dairy.

She still sees an allergist now. One allergy stayed, allergy to kiwi, dairy, strawberry, she grew out of.

My DS also had sensitivity to tomato which was a large rash. He grew out of it by age 3. We had total avoidance for about 2.5 years.

If he also has reactions to cows milk you would be better to get him completely dairy free, toddler milk and formula contains dairy. You can get fortified coconut milk, just see what he likes. You would need to get pure or vitalite spread, use olive oils and no cheese or yogurt / check for hidden dairy in baked foods etc. and yes get your GP to refer for allergy testing and they will advise you best. But this could take some time.

Keep a diary, photograph the rash or any reactions and avoid completely all food he reacts to.

This is good advice.
