Vomiting Bugs

Hi all,
My daughter is 14 months and has been at nursery for 4 months. She loves it now. Only issue is the constant illness, which is to be expected. However, she has had 2 vomiting bugs in November. The vomiting starts frequently (every 2-3 hours), then gradually is just once per night. Which again isn’t much of a concern, however, the being sick once per night can go on for 6 days, and even have a 2 day gap. This has happened twice in November and once in May (before nursery). She has slightly runny BM with them, but not diarrhoea, and no other symptoms (slight temp and lethargic first night of the most recent bout). She is also completely herself during the day. She has great motor/language development and no other concerns. I’ve been to the GP a few times about it and they have limited concern, but haven’t checked her physically. Has anyone else experienced this on /off vomiting that lasts for a week before?

Thanks

If she still has diarrhoea, I'd go back to the GP and ask them to weigh and measure her and record it in the Red Book so that you have a baseline to compare with in the future and also ask them to send off a stool sample, just to check that she doesn't need some help to recover.

Low iron levels can also make them more susceptible to illness so it might be worth trying her with some iron rich foods.

Poivronrouge · 30/11/2022 21:55

Thanks, although no diarrhoea as such. She’s recently been checked by the HV and weight on track. Nappies are also generally full.
Such an odd one, as we’re told that these bugs clear up in 48 hours, and they don’t seem to! Thanks on the iron, she has a good diet, but you never know if they’re deficient in anything. So I’ll have a look at her iron intake.

thanks

Is she still drinking milk before bed? Milk generally will upset their tummies for a while after a sickness bug.

Yes, she’s breastfed still and has breast milk before bed. She’s still a bit of a feed to sleep baby!

Could be a lactose intolerance thing following the initial stomach bug? Could you cut out dairy yourself and from her diet too for around a month?

PritiPatelsMaker · 01/12/2022 07:03

Actually you cutting down or cutting out dairy is a good suggestion as well as butting down/cutting out her dairy.

Like SNW says, they can get temporary lactose intolerance following a stomach bug and she's had 2, poor thing Flowers

Poivronrouge · 01/12/2022 07:50

Thanks, I’d not really thought of food allergies post sick bug. Unsure why it would only present at night. Something else to add is whenever she’s had these bugs she’s also had a bad cough/runny nose, so I could be mucus accumulation during the night which is causing a gag reflex. But it’s so hard to tell when they can’t tell you how they feel!

Have you tried propping up the top end of the cot slightly so that she's not lying quite so flat?

Poivronrouge · 01/12/2022 09:53

So she bed shares with us as she’s breastfed, we’ve tried to move her to her own cot but nothing worked! She’s been sick on and off for a week now, once every 24-48 hours and it’s always at night or first thing in the morning. I’ve spoken to 2 GPs now, one private and one nhs, neither of whom seem to have any concerns so 🤷🏻‍♂️

How is her growth? Only ask as friends of ours had a daughter who started being sick a lot; she was also quite small and it turned out she had coeliac disease

A bf Mum cutting out lactose won’t make a difference as all mammals produce lactose in their milk.

Poivronrouge · 01/12/2022 15:19

Yep her growth is totally fine, HV measured her and she’d in the 75th Centile for growth and size

My 3 year old is same started nursery in September been ill now for well over a month and this last week just constantly coughing and been sick… anything from 1 - 4 sicks a day :( roll on spring

PritiPatelsMaker · 01/12/2022 20:59

If she's still waking at night for feeds, which isn't unusual at this age, you can do some gentle night weaning. Obviously don't do any sleep training whilst she's poorly but it's something to consider when she's well again Flowers

Poivronrouge · 01/12/2022 21:59

Thanks guys, yes it’s pretty brutal, the daily
vomiting. Thanks for the details on the night weaning. We are keen to establish this, she can be very touchy if she stirs and doesn’t get a BF during the night. She can still have some bad nights even at 14 months

If the vomiting is daily and just in the morning I would go back to the GP again today @Poivronrouge.

Sunshinegirl82 · 02/12/2022 17:18

It's not uncommon, I've had this with sickness bugs before. That said, once it's gone past 3 or 4 days then I'd push for a gp appointment especially if combined with sore ear/throat etc. on two occasions we've had this it turned out to be an ear infection/tonsillitis which needed antibiotics.

I was also told viral, viral, viral on loads of occasions before someone actually had a look. It's frustrating but you know your child, if you're concerned don't be afraid to be a bit of a nuisance!

Poivronrouge · 02/12/2022 19:07

Thanks guys, I’ve spoken to a few GPs and they don’t seem to think that there’s any issue. Although they haven’t seen her physically yet. Although the HV did see her last week and said she was perfect. Instinctively, I know that there’s nothing serious here, it’s just the duration that I’m not comfortable with. (One week, one vomit either during the night or in the morning). She hasn’t been sick as of yet since yesterday morning. But she may be. The GP said that I should call back if it’s still going on my next Thursday. So 🤞🏼, it’s cleared up by then.

Thank you! She’s only 14 months so it’s tricky to know what other symptoms are going on. I can’t wait until she can communicate a bit better, so she can tell me!

If it helps OP, my DD had a vomiting bug (ended up in A&E with it) back in September. She was still being sick once a night for over a week - believe it was the milk causing it, but it did stop after about 8 or 9 days if I remember correctly.

PritiPatelsMaker · 03/12/2022 19:43

How is she tonight @Poivronrouge? Is she any better?

Poivronrouge · 03/12/2022 20:42

Hey guys, so she’s got another cough from nursery but she hadn’t been sick since Thursday morning. That was a week in. So hopefully it’s passed, but she’s gone 2 days before. My only concern is that coughing can also make her vomit! My wife also has the same cold. All fun and games with these young ones at nursery!!

OP posts:
Poivronrouge · 04/12/2022 17:53

Just as an update, there has been no vomit since Thursday morning , so 🤞🏼
