Talk to me about ADD

I'm trying to get a GP appointment (south east England) to raise my suspicion that DS may have ADD.

DS is 5 (Year 1) and has always been very difficult. He's easily distracted, impossible to instruct and disruptive and has been since he was a toddler, in every setting - at home, in childcare, at school, on playdates, at activities. Academically, his teachers believe he is capable, but he is struggling because he doesn't pay attention or follow instructions or remember to do anything. I don't think he's hyperactive.

Everything I've read on here in the past suggests that looking for an assessment for AD(H)D is going to be a long and frustrating journey, which may or may not result in things improving.

What do I need to know before we start? What do you wish you had done differently at this stage? Are there resources we will eventually get directed to in two years' time that we could just read now?!

Thanks for any insights.
