How do you sleep when your kid has a vomiting bug?

4yo in bed with me tonight. Mainly because the only toilet we have is in my en suite. He's vomited once, pain in his stomach, fever, won't let me touch him unless it's to rub his back. Of course I'm worried about him but equally, how do you sleep knowing he could vomit all over the bed sheets at any second? Feel like I'm going to be awake all night in case he needs comfort or needs a bowl shoved under his head!

You kind of half doze... unless they are 16 and exceptionally drunk then you stay up all night looking back fondly on when they were 4 😉

Hope he is ok soon. Also - put a towel on the bedsheets.

Multiple towels down already. First tummy bug he's had since he was tiny!

I slept on a fold out chair bed. Ds (1) vomited in my bed while I was out. DP slept in a spare bed in DS room.

Tonight is round 2. As both the sofa and our bed are wet where we carpet cleaned them today lol Tonight I get the single. DP gets the pullout on the floor.

Glamorous. It feels like we've had a row haha.

Towel and bucket nearby. And light on if you can. With cup of water x

Towels underneath and over the top, bowl nearby, low light kept on and doze as best you can! Fingers crossed it passes quickly!

I congratulate you on making it to 4 without too many tummy bugs. I swear they were all the rage last year, at least 2 a month for a couple of months.

Towels down, sick bowl at the ready and even a towel trail to the toilet and you'll be grand.

Good luck to all!

I guess the answer is that you don’t really sleep!
Good luck, op!

I always have my DC in my bed when they have a bug. Bucket right next to them in bed, towels on the pillows. You just have to grab what sleep you can and hope it passes quickly x

I'm clearly horrible as I let my children vom in their own beds. I just wouldn't be able to sleep next to them knowing it could happen any time. I clear up immediately and then try and soothe them to sleep in their bed and then go back to my own. I sleep horribly because I'm on edge listening. Rather that than a front row seat though.

Inspired by the time the 4 year old projectiled over us all at 1am when we were camping... I put the double airbed up in the living room with a waterproof sheet on then towels, spare jammies, cool boiled water in a straw bottle and shower cap on her as she has masses of curls so keeps her hair clean.

Then I doze lightly with one hand on the child and one hand on the bucket ready to move the minute I hear/feel the signs of a potential spew 😬 Good luck 💐

I have waterproof mattress and pillowcase protectors on my bed as well as 7 yr old DDs . So she can sleep where she feels most comfortable. Double or triple layer sheets and mattress protectors so they can be whipped off quickly and leave a clean set underneath (best MN tip I’ve seen). Sleeping bags easily accessible in case duvet has been vomited on.

Having said that when I found her lying in vomit when I did a last check before bed last weekend she ended up having a quick shower and change then fell asleep on the sofa under a blanket while I sorted out her bed and soft toys. I dozed on and off at the other end of the sofa while I did three loads in the washing machine and took care of her when she was sick again. She went back to her bed at 5am and I got a couple of hours in my bed. She was more or less fine the next day and I drank lots of coffee.

Yes, I totally had that last year too. I don't want to curse myself and agree this year has been better so far ...

Agree with thick towels down and the bowl nearby.

My dd has had one all week thankfully think it's passing now, I have 2 old towels she sleeps on if sick on 1 just whip it off and the other one was still there incase sick again, then boil wash them and put bk on bed for next night ready also a shower curtain on floor with sick bowl has saved my carpet.

Clammyclam · 27/11/2022 23:29

Camp bed/ air bed at the side of our bed for DC- all the bowls and towels
Night light on/ door open to the landing with light on
You sleep very lightly/ doze mostly
It'll be over soon but until then you have our solidarity.
