Been given weaning advice, can you help?

Hi there. Not sure if this is the right sub. Anyhow, my DS is nearly 5 months old. Got him weighed by a random HV yesterday, he weighs nearly 17 pounds. I told her about trying him with some mashed up Christmas Dinner at Xmas, as he won't be far off 6 months then. She said well with him being a big boy (he's not chunky or anything) she wouldn't advise moving him onto pureed until he's around 7 to 8 months old. The reason being is if he puts on too much weight with food and milk, he won't be able to crawl or roll over properly (already trying to roll now). Surely waiting until 8 months to start on blended food is too long? He is always watching us eat, and I know he will be ready soon. He's formula fed, by the way. Any advice would be appreciated :)

Mine were weaned at 3 months and 4 months as a guide at the time -

I see no harm if he’s ready.

Ridiculous. Also why is she suggesting purées? Finger foods are by far the easiest way to start weaning.

The signs of readiness are
-able to sit up unaided
-can grip item and bring to mouth
-lost the tongue thrust reflex

I have never heard that. I had 2 bigger boys (both around 19lb at 5 months) and they rolled, crawled all of it on time and were both walking by about 11 months. Now they're tall skinny toddlers. Both were weaned at 5 months. DS1 because no amount of milk would satiate him and DS2 because he hated milk

Sounds like BS to me.

Came here also to recommend solid starts as an absolutely amazing resource for weaning.

What ridiculous advice! That's crazy!

What in the hell?

He should eat when he:

a) is ready
b) wants to eat.

Give him some of your Christmas dinner. Soft veg, mashed potato, hunk of turkey and let him enjoy the flavours and textures. It'll be ages before he's getting much of it in anyway if you do a more baby-led weaning approach. He can have fun tasting foods but the vast majority of his calories will still be coming from milk for quite a while yet.

Have fun and take photos of him enjoying Christmas dinner with you Smile
