Anything else we can do for a cough?

My SS who’s 4 has an awful cough at the moment - it’s not a chest infection he’s been to the doctors but is having regular calpol and cough medicine. It’s keeping him awake most of the night and he’s exhausted.

We’re airing his room through the day, using Vapor rub and not putting the heating on too much as well as sitting him up in the night as much as possible - is there anything else at all we can do to help him?

I do have a chest infection and am coughing like crazy so I feel very sorry for my fiancé right now who’s dealing with us both coughing all night but my poor SS is my
main concern.

The calpol vapour plug in thing works wonders for DD’s chest when she’s got a bad cough.

Plus sitting with him in a steamy bathroom - I know that’s usually advice for croup, but does help!

I second this, has worked wonders for my toddler.

Sorry, realise that's completely unclear! I meant the calpol plug in. Vicks do a good one too.

A humidifier in his room overnight and raising the head of his bed a bit or putting a pillow under the mattress to raise it.

I have tried alllllllll of the above and my boy still coughs and splutters all night🤦🏻‍♀️

Try sterimar nasal spray twice a day. DD had a persistent cough, no cheat infection or anything else obvious, and Dr thought maybe she was just struggling to clear her airways and it was going round and round if that makes sense.

Anyway we tried it and it made such a difference in a few days, I couldn't believe it! The. Felt a bit guilty because poor DD had been struggling with this cough for three weeks!

Then you probably need an asthma check tbh

Mrsmch123 · 29/11/2022 06:10

@Ostryga i took him to the doctors as I was worried about asthma but she said it wasn't.....he had a chest infection about 10 weeks ago and it's been since then. I will take him back and say I'm not happy with the ongoing cough.

Calpol vapour plug in helps a bit. Also if you have a humidifier, use that. One (long!) night I remember with DD1, we had to turn the shower on and leave en-suite door open as it was the only thing that stopped her coughing.

Another vote for a humidifier here it works
wonders , we have the Vicks Paediatric cold air one , hands down in my top 3 best ever parenting purchases.
