Hello

DS hasn’t done a proper poo since 18th November. He’s done some little sharts and a few very small nuggets but no proper poos.

time to go to the urgent care centre?

Lots of fresh orange juice with bits in. Does DC eat plenty of fresh fruit and fresh vegetables?

RandomCatGenerator · 25/11/2022 07:39

Yep, loves fruit and veg! But unfortunately won’t really drink fruit juice…

Could you try freezing fruit juice to make an ice lolly?

Can give a try.

At eight days should I be taking him to urgent care, is my main question?

I'd be getting a movicol prescription. My little one suffered badly with constipation for a while and I was annoyed with myself that I faffed around with orange juice and bran flakes for too long. He was miserable. Movicol had him sorted quickly

greenredgrass · 25/11/2022 15:07

Agree with above poster. We had some real trouble recently with our 22MO constipation. Went for for a couple of week and tried everything diet-wise. She was in tears trying to push and it was horrible to witness.
Got baby version of Movicol prescribed and it's worked brilliantly.

holierthanthou73 · 25/11/2022 15:09

Call 111 for advice surely instead of wasting time askIng here 🤷🏻‍♀️

Justisme · 25/11/2022 15:26

Same with my 15 month old. Loves every type of fruit and vegetables and drinks loads of water. 6 weeks of constipation and the last week was the worst. Cried everytime and I had to put her in the bath to
help ease the pain and help her. Lactulose didn’t help at all

we ended up getting a prescription for Movicol and it has helped her so much.

I would take him to urgent centre and get your hands on Movicol and start it asap. The risk with leaving them constipated for too long is impaction of feces and then needing an enema.

my daughter now goes almost everyday without any pain and this seems like her preferred way but because of constipation was only able to go once or twice a week.

Justisme · 25/11/2022 15:27

Ignore @holierthanthou73 - this is a very common problem amongst toddler so I see no problem with asking on here especially as loads of mums (like myself) will have dealt with it

Justisme · 25/11/2022 15:30

Also the reason I say go to urgent care is because it will take time to get seen by your gp and you don’t want to wait too long and have th e problem build. Also, urgent care can check your little boy over incase there is another reason.

l needed a further prescription of movicol so have today called up my gp and asked for it

Wishiwasatailor · 25/11/2022 15:34

constipation should be treated by GP ideally but if you can’t get a phone call back today you might need to call 111 for an out of hours prescription or attend urgent care. Have you looked at the ERIC website for advice on constipation?

Wishiwasatailor · 25/11/2022 15:36

@Justisme if the movicol is for you you can buy over the counter.
@RandomCatGenerator if they do give movicol/laxido etc get the unflavoured version you can always add squash once it’s been made up. The flavoured stuff is grim

ispyduck · 25/11/2022 15:45

DS was an absolute nightmare for making himself constipated during potty training. We gave him lactulose each time it happened to get him moving and he was perfectly fine. No issues anymore thankfully!

Justisme · 25/11/2022 16:27

@Wishiwasatailor ive said in my message it’s for my baby so need the child (1+) version.

rmummyofone · 25/11/2022 16:37

When my little boy was that age we had this issue for well over a year. He was referred to hospital too. Plenty of fruit and veg in his diet and water too but he had one bad constipation incident that made him scared to poo. So he'd hold it which made it worse.

Was on laxido for months and then we weaned him off it. He's 2.5 now almost 3, and he's finally pooping well and I put it down to diet, pears are amazing and so are prunes. Add it to weetabix in the morning.

rmummyofone · 25/11/2022 16:43

Would recommend formula milk too.. GP said better than cows milk. So had him on formula for a bit I don't think it helped much though.

Apples, pears, mango purée (ellas kitchen) prune purée and lots of juice with water.

Keep water with them all day :)
Someone mentioned ice lollies thats a great idea.

Honestly this problem was so bad I'd have to think twice before going out bc he'd stomp to avoid pooping / cry loads. He was inconsolable. We had to call an ambulance one actually, as he bled from the poo being so hard :((

Try get it sorted before it gets that bad, hopefully will not be that bad at all for you

Thank you @Justisme: This is exactly the sorr of thing mumsnet is for, I thought - not life threatening and lots of you will have experienced it!

He was sent home from nursery this afternoon as he was fretful and not his usual very cheery self. 90 mins in the urgent care centre and we came away with some glycerin suppositories. The doctor who dealt with me was incredibly offhand and impatient so I went to the pharmacist too and she confirmed she would provide the same.

In they went after a bath and warm milk, just before bed. Hoping we’re in for a visit to brown town tomorrow..if not, more suppositories tomorrow and Sunday, and GP on Monday if there’s no movement.

ill definitely try to use some of the tips above for future instances and to get more liquid into him. He’s just not fussed about drinking unless it’s milk…

OP posts:
RandomCatGenerator · 25/11/2022 22:11

@rmummyofone this is my worry - he’s scared to poo. His arsehole opens wide and I can see the poo, but he pulls it back in rather than out, as he must be worried about how much it will hurt. And it’s probably now hard and will hurt, and so the vicious cycle continues.

OP posts:
RandomCatGenerator · 26/11/2022 23:26

Well, we went to A and E. They saw him quite quickly and gave us glycerin suppositories to administer basically whenever he goes for a sleep.

Three lots later (sleep, nap and sleep), we’ve finally seen some movement. Two big chunks out, sizeable and quite hard - poor baby, they were clearly really sore. No suppository in for the rest of the night and we’ll have one more go tomorrow as his stomach is still really hard.

Hopefully things will start to move on their own now. If they don’t, A and E said to get an
GP appt on Monday. Easier said than done!

Justisme · 28/11/2022 06:48

I’m surprised they haven’t given you movicol.

glad he is finally pooping though. He must have had some relief but needs to continue. My daughter was doing the same refusing to go but hoping that bcos it’s been soft the last few times she will stop avoiding it
