Which steriliser?

Looking to buy an electric baby bottle steriliser. Any advice on which option to go for?

  1. Steriliser with dryer - is drying necessary?
  1. Normal electric steriliser?
  1. UV steriliser?

Any particular brands to avoid?

I've wasted a lot of money on sterilisers. However for me, I have found that Milton sterilising tabs is by far the easiest option. Make up a big batch of solution, pop things in and out as and when you've used/need and it lasts 24 hours without needing to be changed. Each item only needs 15 minutes in the solution to be ready to use, but you can leave it in there for 24 hours if you don't need it immediately. It's no slower than an electric steriliser by the time you've got an electric one loaded carefully, and let it run the programme. Plus, a lot of the time you can't fit everything in them either.

Alternatively, the MAM bottles are self sterilising in the microwave in 3 minutes IIRC.

I found the electric steriliser such a faff and it needed constant descaling... I've been very happy with the Philips avent microwave one.

Tablets or soap and water.

Low tech is the way to go.

Yes Milton in a tub is definitely the best IMO

Although if just the odd bottle the self sterilising MAM ones are pretty snazzy.

agree with others we tried a lot of different methods but landed on Milton

feelingprettylight · 23/11/2022 02:52

I had both electric Philips and Avent microwave for first baby. Microwave definitely the way forward! Pick one up for £ secondhand.

Drying - not necessary.
UV - sounds like over engineering.

I agree on Milton, the tommie tippie steam one I got was a faff and the top shelf kept falling off. I got a Milton one because we were travelling to cornwall and staying in hotels and it was so much easier.

Mydogatemypurse · 23/11/2022 03:21

I had a few electric ones. They were stressful. Take too long with screaming baby. Burn hands on steam.
Best is Milton and the little microwave tub that just takes a bit of water and quick but can also be used with milton tablets without microwave, handy if you go away.

This is it. 2 mins in microwave or 15 mins cold water. But like other poster said you can just have the bottles in there and it lasts for ages so you literally just take them out and dont have to wait.

Just noticed they do a single bottle size now too which looks fab.

wishuponastar1988 · 23/11/2022 03:59

We bought the Milton cold water steriliser and the TT electric steam one - we gave the steam one away after using it a few times because it was a faff. Used the Milton cold water steriliser and it's so easy and faff free - cost £20 too so can't go wrong! It's as simple as putting cold water in the tub with a tablet - bottles sterilised in 15 mins and can be left in the water for 24 hours.

buonnatale · 23/11/2022 04:11

Have got a UV one, it's very simple and much less messy than Milton albeit a lot more expensive.

Nat6999 · 23/11/2022 04:22

I had the Avent steriliser at home, it was easy, I could put the bottles straight from the dishwasher in to the steriliser, it took up to 6 bottles so I did all the bottles we had used overnight in the morning after I had made up that days bottles (at that time you could make up bottles & put them in the fridge) & the same at night with the bottles I had used during the day. I had a microwave steriliser for our caravan, it was okay but I could only do 4 bottles at a time.

grumpytoddler1 · 23/11/2022 04:51

We have a UV one, a vitalbaby nurture, and it's brilliant. I am predominantly breastfeeding though so I don't have a vast amount of sterilising to do. It's admittedly not as big as a bucket full of Milton so can't fit quite as much in, but it is infinitely better than the steam sterilisers, takes 7 minutes, doesn't leave things hot or wet (in fact it also has a drying setting for bottles that have just been in the dishwasher).

sjxoxo · 23/11/2022 04:54

I used a Milton tub and Milton sterilising tablets. Mega easy and no fuss. Refill with cold tap water each evening, add tablet and Chuck the stuff in. Take out in the morning and all ready to go! I thought it was great. Now I use still it occasionally for sterilising toys etc! X

trrk · 23/11/2022 08:21

We just use the Mam bottles directly in the microwave and microwave steriliser bags for anything else (pacifiers).

Choc2022 · 23/11/2022 17:11

Thanks for all the suggestions. Seems to be a clear winner.

The ideal option is an electric baby bottle sterilizer because it works quickly and is simple to operate. It takes little time or effort to sterilize your baby's bottle. Turn on the sterilizer and place the bottle inside. The sterilization procedure will be finished in a short while. You'll be informed via the sterilization indication when the bottles have been sterilized. Other utensils can usually be placed in different compartments in sterilizers. You can therefore utilize this versatile tool for additional applications. I purchased one from a medical equipment website.
