Toddler pushing things

Hello. I've tried googling this but it comes up with pushing children, which isn't the stage we are at (yet!).
My almost two year old loves pushing things. He's been walking almost a year but loves pushing his walker, his high chair, dining room chairs, toy pushchairs around.

Is this just a phase? If I try & stop him he has a huge tantrum & just keeps going back to the same items to push.

I don't really want to tell him off but he's also doing it at nursery with their chairs and often trips over.

We had to leave a play group the other week as he was pushing chairs around there, screeching them across the floor & throwing himself on the floor when I moved the chair. Help Confused

It’s probably a schema. Nursery/ you just need to give something appropriate to push.

If he isn't hurting anybody, I'd leave him to it. My daughter (nearly 2) loves pushing things. However, if she is at risk of hurting somebody (eg. pushing her pram in a room full of people), she's told to stop. If this results in a tantrun, she's either directed to something she can push or is given a different toy as a distraction Smile

Completely normal! They all love pushing things round at this age. You just need to make sure it's something appropriate, so not chairs. Toy pram and walker are great, maybe get him a shopping trolley or push along car/dog.

Does he have any ride in toys because he may also enjoy those (you can get ones that he can both push and ride on).

It's also completely age appropriate to have a massive tantrum when you tell them 'no', so don't worry about that either.

He may be enjoying the chairs/highchair because they're heavier and offer more resistance so it gives more physical feedback. I'd try putting something heavy in his toy pram or a toy trolley and see if that scratches his itch!

As others have said , totally normal. I do remember it being pain sometimes when things would fall over/scratch things etc. I don't think there's an easy answer... Maybe try to find more appropriate things for him to push?

Mine loves pushing things too and I honestly have never thought anything of it.
I think it is normal, I would stop him with the chairs though like you said and deal with the tantrum

Mine also loves pushing stuff, especially the dining room chairs! I just let her crack on, tbh, but if it's not a good time I distract with something else to do.

It's just a schema, let him carry on pushing safely

Then you all for your lovely replies and making me feel better. I didn't realise it was so common.

I'll take the advice on board. I think that's why he likes putting potatoes in his pushchair. Funny little things aren't they Smile

I'd never heard of schemas before. Makes an interesting read thank you
