Feel like two year old is behind

My son is two next month and other children seem miles ahead of him, able to hold a conversation of sorts. Mine does have about fifty words but they are very sporadic and random - there are some ‘useful’ ones in there like hello, bye bye, all gone and so on. But other children his age seem able to say things like ‘feel sick / need poo / want dolly’ and so on.

He can’t say his name or use pronouns yet, have read this is a milestone he should have by now … likewise talking in sentences. He can say things like bye bye mummy, hello baby but nothing else. Definitely no three word sentences.

it’s a bit of a source of worry, anyone able to reassure me?

My younger brother didn't speak at all until he was well over two. He's now a well adjusted and articulate man working in a highly skilled professional job. Has never been a chatterbox though. I really wouldn't worry too much, based on your description

Honestly he sounds absolutely fine! Two word sentences for a just two year old is quite normal.

I'm sure your son is fine. I worked with a girl who told me she never uttered on word before the age of three. She grew up to be extremely clever and capable.

Please don't worry. At two he is still a baby. Once he starts talking properly it will be non stop!

Don't worry every child is different. He'll surprise you and talk when he is ready then you'll be complaining that he is never quiet lol.

One of my children had no words at that age. The other one had one. There is so much variation.

Please don't worry. My DS said his first word at 19 months ('shark'... very useful 🙄) and by his second birthday he had maybe 20 or 30 words but he absolutely was not talking in sentences! He's 3.5 now and talks very fluently with a good vocabulary and complex sentence structures, I'd say his language is on a par with any other kid his age. They all develop at different rates.

I was concerned about his language back then so we had an appointment with a speech and language therapist, who said that the main thing they look out for at that age is whether you can get your child's attention and whether they can get yours, plus understanding simple instructions, etc. If you are concerned I'd recommend getting referred to an SLT (HV should be able to make a referral) for peace of mind, but most likely by the time you actually get an appointment you won't be worried any more!

My DS literally grunted until he was practically 3! Then one day he started talking and has never shut up
since! 😆

I really worried about my son as he said so little. Not even a great deal in the way of sounds. He would clap, point, did a lot of signing but no sentences etc. Then suddenly he started to speak in full sentences. We couldn't understand how he could move so quickly from virtually nothing, to quite complex words so quickly. He never shut up then. Still doesn't.
