Is this nits or dandruff?

There was a case in the school a few weeks back. My daughter & I have been itching but every winter we get really dry scalp so i am not sure. Ive not found any black bugs on the nit comb when i wipe onto kitchen roll. Ive treated us both & i wetcomb regularly but the itching is unbearable.

Im thinking ive missed some when doing my own head which then multiply & I pass back to my daughter!

Is this nits or dandruff?

If you are itching, I would say nits. We had to consistently wet comb the whole family for about a month to get rid of the problem!

ooherrmissus14 · 17/11/2022 21:43

Hard to tell- are they moving?

SalviaOfficinalis · 17/11/2022 21:45

The egg cases are white though so you won’t necessarily see black bugs.

Putting conditioner on before combing helps then slide off the hair better.

It’s making m me itch typing this out so it may be partly psychological!

Love your username, even I started scratching just hearing the word nits

itchyyy · 17/11/2022 21:46

No they're not moving. They also come away quite easily which apparently nits do not. But i do feel like a sort of tingle then i need to itch my head, is that something moving? But theres never black on the comb!

Has anyone got pictures from when they found nits on a comb?

I would cover your head with conditioner and comb through. Clean the comb in a basin as you can see them better in that.

My DD had two bouts it was horrible but only she had them

DeathMetalMum · 17/11/2022 21:47

Nothing on the picture suggests nits. However the lice are not black, they are almost translucent or a light brown ish colour. Generally the eggs will 'snap' or make a slight crunching noise if you press the back of your nail against them on the combs flat surface.

maeveiscurious · 17/11/2022 21:47

The creatures mean you are fairly advanced, it's the eggs that come first

ODFOx · 17/11/2022 21:48

Use a treatment like hedrin Once. do not apply sparingly, then comb and check. My SDs Mum used to use one bottle of lotion between them and they had really thick hair so she never caught them all. Soak your DDs hair overnight with a dimeticone treatment and then comb thoroughly from the roots. Then you'll know.

I find if someone mentions the word nits around me I feel all itchy. Once I forget about it, it passes could it be the same for you? I've only had nits once when I was a child and my mum always done us with conditioner and combed out and then some sort of nit treatment. Eggs are quite hard to remove but do come out eventually. They are almost stuck on to the base of the hair shaft

Shlo · 17/11/2022 21:51

Nit eggs are teardrop shaped and they only come off the hair by sliding them down the hair shaft and off the end

I know what you mean but my head just itches throughout the day! Then again dry scalp is itchy?

Can't really see your pic, but the eggs are sticky, smooth little ovals. If you've got flat/light weight flakes then it's just your skin.

You'll know when you get a live one. Tis a sad and horrifying moment when you catch a creature in the prongs 😷

TellMeWhere · 17/11/2022 21:57

I have a dry scalp and it can feel very crawly at times, but I know I don't have nits.

Recently discovered black seed oil which seems to help a bit with the itching.

namechangeagain3 · 17/11/2022 22:08

@itchyyy It's probably your scalp! What shampoo are you using? I've recently had to change from my usual L'Oréal ones as I'm now allergic after ten years of using it Confused. So weird but now I'm using a herbal essence one I think it is, it's stopped!

Oddbutnotodd · 17/11/2022 22:14

I used to tap anything from the comb onto a white sheet of paper. Nits are clearly identified at this point. You can see their legs. I was horrified and fascinated in equal measure when I found one.

Bluelightbaby · 17/11/2022 22:31

Hard to tell but doesn’t look like nits. You’d know if you saw then…

FeelWellEnoughToTellYou · 17/11/2022 22:35

I wipe the comb on a folded wet kitchen roll, it's easier to see what was on the comb with the white background.

RosesAndHellebores · 17/11/2022 22:46

When the children had nits it took about a month to clear them. The big fat juicy ones lay eggs and you have to comb out the entire life cycle.

First the big fat juicy ones
Then the medium ones
Then a couple of weeks of little ones
The teeny, tiny ones
When you get to the end of the teeny tiny ones there shoukd be no more because the little ones can't lay eggs.

Sit them in the bath, condition generously, section the hair and comb through each section from scalp to the ends.

The children found it absolutely fascinating and we used to line them up on the edge of the bath so they could have a good look.

I think the mega harvest was 37.

As soon as they were clear, ds had a no 2 cut.

DD was only about two and was thereafter trained in a thorough comb through every time she had a bath.

Neither dh nor I got them. DS got them due to ignorance and I didn't notice until I saw one or six. When that happens they have taken hold.

DC both were blonde so never saw any eggs.

DS never got them again. Because I was assiduous with dd I occasionally found a full grown one but thinknit had just hopped on --when she sat on the same table of one child whose parents were obviously not on top of it.

KitchenSupper · 17/11/2022 23:04

I keep a magnifying glass in the bathroom for checking. But they are unmistakable when you find them.
Itchy scalp can be loads of things.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 17/11/2022 23:15

Nits (the eggs) stick to the hair and don't easy come off. The lice are the crawly things that make you itch.

HipHopBanzai · 17/11/2022 23:22

Honestly, you know when you get a headlice. The eggs are unmistakable once you've seen them too. They're sort of tear shaped, or ovals with a little hook on the end.

justanothermummma · 17/11/2022 23:34

For future proofing against them get Vosene shampoo and spray for after. My teacher friend swears by it as she's never got them - so I got it for my girls when my eldest started school.
You can get them in 3 packs on Amazon x
