Why are they asking 'who will be' that implies some sort of choice?really odd question. Who has asked you this?

I'd assumed op had English as a second language and that's why the question was phrased oddly.

As a lone parent I have been asked

“who is the dad” by friends who weren’t aware that I was in a serious relationship

or

“what about the dad” but usually that is once they know me, realised I’m not married or cohabiting and have a kid.

I personally don’t get offended - human curiosity I guess. Although it’s nobody’s business so I find people don’t tend to ask unless we are close or they’ve got brave after a few drinks and we are in deep chat.
