When did you say goodbye to the pushchair for good?

DD is 2.5 so I know where not there yet but just wondered what age your little ones were when you took the pushchair away as an option.

DD has pretty good stamina for walking, we go on a dog walk daily and she can easily manage 45mins - 1hr at toddler pace (we meander around the woods so it's not like we have to be anywhere). If I go on a short trip to the supermarket or the library I don't bother taking the pushchair (supermarket is a drive away so I have the car on hand, library is about 5-10 min walk from our house).

We typically use the pushchair for days out and longer walks, but through the summer she wasn't happy about being in it much and wanted to walk. I've noticed since the weather is colder, she's asking for the pushchair more (and a blanket to wrap up in 🤣) and it just got me thinking about what age you remove it as an option for longer walks/days out or do you just wait until they no longer want to be in it?

DS was just before 3 but he was massive and really fit from lots of walking so he definitely had the stamina to keep going. He would refuse to get in it as well! We just used to give him a shoulder ride or piggy back if he was absolutely knackered but he managed most things including low level fells from 3

DappledThings · 11/11/2022 18:57

Youngest was 2.3 at start of first lockdown which kind of forced the issue. We basically stopped using it then and didn't need it by the time we were back to going further than walking round the block.

But our sling was a good one that went all the way up to about 3.5 years so we did sometimes use that too. Especially if we were out and she needed a nap.

At 3. But keep it until 4 in case of injury etc.

Gor rid of my snazzy icandy when DS was 1 and used my pop up maclaren after that until he was 3.5 ish

purpleme12 · 11/11/2022 19:06

When she turned 4. Pretty much exactly.
It was exactly the right time

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 11/11/2022 19:08

My youngest just turned 2 and won’t get in the pushchair, can climb out of it. We do drive though, perhaps if we didn’t it would make a difference.

Yolanda524 · 11/11/2022 19:09

Ours came to a natural end during covid and didn’t go anywhere. Ds turned 3 during 2020. I do miss it on family days out for somewhere to carry drinks, snacks and coats but so much easier not having it.

Beees · 11/11/2022 19:09

DS is nearly 3 and of his similar aged peers those who don't use the car as much all still regularly use the pushchair DS included.

Those who predominantly use the car have mostly stopped using it.

I think it will be invaluable for this winter, especially if we need to be somewhere at a set time. I'm in no hurry to spend even longer dawdling along in the cold so we will probably look at getting rid of it next spring/summer.

Ihaveoflate · 11/11/2022 19:13

My daughter is 3.5 yo and we are using it a lot less now than we were in the summer, but we still use it for walking to nursery (about a mile).

We won't be able to get rid of it completely until she goes to school at just turned 4. We're trying to encourage scooter or bike use for at least part of the route but she really doesn't have much stamina (or motivation!).

SallyWD · 11/11/2022 19:14

When my DS started reception. Until then we were still using it occasionally but I said I wasn't going to take him to school in a pushchair!

SparkyBlue · 11/11/2022 19:20

DD is 3.5 and we went away for a few days for mid term and brought no buggy. The first time in 10 years. I very rarely use it with her unlike her older lazier siblings who'd probably still sit in it if I let them .

Baconand · 11/11/2022 19:23

We are still using it at 3, but on days out I use it mostly to carry all the bags!

DD hates walking though. She always says she is tired!

trilbydoll · 11/11/2022 19:28

When dd2 started school I told her she really couldn't use it anymore 😅

We took it to disneyland paris when dc were 6y9m and 4y9m and although dd1 walked the first day, they shared the pushchair on and off for the rest of the trip. It would have completely ruined the whole holiday if we had made them walk.

LunaNova · 11/11/2022 19:48

Thanks all this is really helpful!

I think having not used it much in the summer it came as a bit of a surprise that DD has wanted to use it more recently. Though we have done more walking recently (outside of the dog walks) so it could just be my perception that's off!

I imagine once the warmer weather rolls around (coinciding with her turning 3) we'll probably be ready to say goodbye for good, but didn't know if my expectations were realistic. I'll certainly miss it for dumping all the stuff on though haha.

The Disneyland bit is soooo true! We took DD just after her 2nd birthday this year and she was adamant she was walking that first day. She soon learnt that it was better to be in the pushchair though 😂

Mine are now 5 and 3.5. We stopped using it a few months ago, but I'm keeping it for the odd occasion. We're going to Disneyland Paris next year. It'll be long days so I will take the yoyo with a buggy board for the eldest to stand on.

megletthesecond · 12/11/2022 07:57

4.6yrs. There was no point in making them rush in bad weather or when they were tired. They're both autumn babies and had stopped using it by the spring before school started.
I miss that beast of a buggy, still haven't accepted having to carry shopping again.

Merrow · 12/11/2022 07:58

3.5 here. Stopped using it for local walks at around 3, but his nursery was a good few miles away so we kept using it for that. Going to a more local preschool was a good natural end! His inclination to be lazy means that he'd quite happily be in it now. He still prefers cycling to walking, but I've no objection to that. He can't use his scooter but pushchair - scooter seems to be the norm round here.

PuttingDownRoots · 12/11/2022 08:06

When youngest was 4. Elder DD was pretty much out by two but had the buggy board.

We did up to 10 miles a day though in a country where it was 30degrees+ from April to October. She used her bike/scooter for a large part... but sometimes she was just too hot and tired and I needed to get her sister.

Caspianberg · 12/11/2022 08:11

Ds is 2.5 years. We don’t use all the time now, but I’m definitely planning on keeping it until next summer at least. On long days out he might nap still, and it gets really cold where we live so it will be handy to use the thick footmuff still when it’s really cold and I just need to get from a to b fast.
He’s been ill recently and it’s been handy to just let him sit in and rest whilst we all still had a walk in the fresh air.

AliceTheCamelHasFiveHumps · 12/11/2022 08:17

DD is 2y11m and we use it for when we're out and about in town, mostly so if ita busy, we can strap her in. She doesn't nap, so bedtime is 5:39 so we find she can get tired in the mid afternoon, so will take it along with us as a backup.
But she's very happy zooming along on her balance bike, but that's not always appropriate (eg, busy high street).

AliceTheCamelHasFiveHumps · 12/11/2022 08:18

And YY to just needing to get to places! Pop her in and brisk walk! Saves the meandering and fascination if every tiny thing 🤣

wejammin · 12/11/2022 08:23

DS3 just turned 4 this month. We only use the pram now for the afternoon school run. It's a 25 minute walk each way - in the morning he scoots but by 3pm there's no way he'd make it, and he's too heavy for me to carry/sling. We went to Edinburgh in October half term and I took the sling as an emergency - DS3 was unwell so was in the sling quite a lot and my back still hasn't recovered, even though it's a toddler sling and very supportive.

MassiveSalad22 · 12/11/2022 08:23

Around 3 but never really thought about it much like this. Just gradually dwindled. You don’t need to overthink it 😵‍💫

Although I do see some kids arriving to reception in a pushchair and double take. My friend put her kid in a pushchair until a couple of months ago and he’s just started reception. Depends on the temperament of your kid I guess.

ping78 · 12/11/2022 08:31

Had DS2 when eldest had just turned 3, bought a buggy board as double pram seemed unnecessary. He never used it though so that was him done, we walked to nursery every day so he was used to a walk. I did the same with DS2, couldnt wait to ditch the stroller. Did Disneyland Paris when he was 4 and he managed a 30,000 step day! Still remember that stat all these years later!
