2 yo temp not going

My DS has been running a temp since Sunday night . So far he seems fine in himself; eating , drinking, playing etc. But the temp doesn't seem to be shifting it gets worse as the day goes on and through the night.

I took him to the GP yesterday who said it was viral and if the temp doesn't go call 111/GP back. How long would you wait before calling back , we are now on day 5 night 6 with the temperature. Thanks

What is his temp?

upfucked · 11/11/2022 17:02

Have you tried a different thermometer?

Thea91 · 11/11/2022 17:08

I have got 2 thermometers and he is hot to the touch. Of a day it's around 37.8/38 and goes higher during the night to about 39/39.5

Really difficult as I've always been told if they're ok in themselves, eating, drinking, going to the toilet then to let the virus ride it's course. No other symptoms? No rash, confusion, etc? My DD's temps always get worse at night. If you're worried then call 111. Hopefully it'll be out of his system soon.

Did the GP say how long to wait until you need to call 111?

Runestone · 11/11/2022 17:35

Are you giving him medicine?

Thea91 · 11/11/2022 17:58

No other symptoms eating , playing normally etc. No GP didn't say I should have asked. Giving him Calpol.

It’s odd the GP was satisfied to not refer to hospital in the absence of a cause of the infection. Fair enough if he’s coughing, has a runny nose or has red throat/ears but if the temp is genuinely the only symptom they need to find out what’s causing it.
did they test the urine?

Thea91 · 11/11/2022 18:03

Yep urine was clear . She checked his throat and ears as well.

I would ring 111.

kbx201 · 11/11/2022 18:07

Are you giving ibuprofen as well? That's better at bringing down a temperature and you can alternate it with calpol. My boy also had similar and it lasted about a week.

Thea91 · 11/11/2022 18:10

He won't take ibuprofen without a battle spitting it out etc, which then results in him not taking Calpol without a battle .

I've just called 111 waiting for someone to call me back.

It’s so tricky as no one wants to be at A&E on a Friday night but without an obvious source of infection in that age group I think I’d want a second opinion.

Thea91 · 11/11/2022 18:26

Do you think they would be happy with me going down as he is happy in himself ?

OP posts:
ChunkyThighs24 · 11/11/2022 18:35

If he's happy in himself I personally wouldn't be going to A&E. Especially if he's not dehydrated either. Maybe give it one more day & then reassess? Obviously you're his mum so you must do what you think is best. Recently a friend's little girl ran a temp at night for 5/6 nights then it just went, so although it does seems long time it can also be normal. Trust your gut.
