Hi I’m just looking for some peoples experiences of weaning and how you progressed it

my baby is 5 months and is currently eating puréed jars about 5pm every day but so far will only eat fruit ones not veg

I want to know

  1. when did you introduce a second meal as id love to get breakfast started soon as well

  2. when did you begin finger food and what did you use as finger food

  3. when did you move on from jars (if you used them) and start making your own food

im probably asking a lot but feel at a loss where to start with this all as there’s so much conflicting info out there

You don't need to use jars at all. You can introduce finger foods from around 6m. We started with pasta, toast fingers, strips of steak for chewing on, anything we were eating. Broccoli florets were a big hit. We grated apple and let them grab handfuls of that, etc.

Resist the urge to introduce another meal til at least 7 months, if not 8. It is vital that baby continues to get most of their calories from milk as it is much more nutritionally dense than any food.

Look at the NHS website for advice

I found weaning tough with my DD (she's almost 3 and her eating is still atrocious). We delayed weaning properly a while as we were moving house but it all went tits up and ended up just being a disservice to my DD.

I'm going through it again with my 9mth old and the difference is unbelievable. He eats ANYTHING. I think by 8/9 months they're expected to be on 3 meals a day. We waited until 6mths to start weaning properly but it wasn't long before he was having breakfast too. He usually has porridge/baby cereal for breakfast but I've started giving him his milk first as he's been trying to drop the feeds for food and I'd rather keep up the milk.

He loves eating chunks of banana and pieces of toast or bread. Pasta or spag Bol is also a hit and he was eating them early in the weaning process. He seems happy with any veg but we try to limit fruit due to the sugars. My DD ate a lot of fruit when small and she's practically addicted to it but won't eat veg - I don't want the same with my DS.

We started introducing a second meal from about 7 months as DD always wanted to be involved during mealtimes so we always gave her something. But for the most part, she mainly explored what was served until about 8 months when she started actually eating 2 meals a day and then shortly after we introduced a third. We started with finger foods right from the start at 6 months - steamed vegetables (carrot, celery, broccoli, etc), roasted potato wedges, omelet fingers, pancakes. We also gave her some homemade "pureed" food like congee (rice porridge) & mashed potatoes
