Bloody Pokemon for Xmas

God please help! I feel like you need an actual BA in abject nonsense to understand this pokemon card stuff. Basically my son loves it. Loves trading. Loves talking about the cards. He buys a couple of packs a month as his treat. I really thought this obsession would wane, but no... For Christmas he just wants cards. He says that 'all my friends have loads of ultra rares'. Apparently he has the worst cards in his class.

Hes a great boy. He does not say these things in a 'I want gimme gimme' way. Just reporting facts. But he also doesnt know what to ask Santa for, as he says he's never been very lucky with the normal packs. He is asking ME what he should ask for. I do not have a notion. In fact, I think I just spent 20 euro on a bloody fake card on etsy (wanted to buy him a charizard card as surprise).

Any advice on what to buy? His birthday is just before christmas, so between the two Im happy to pay about 200 euro. Though it breaks my heart a bit to spend so much on this cr@p.

You get a lot of cards with the board game, I think.

My boys loved these tins

I can ask them later as they are now teens and still slightly obsessed

If he has a particular favourite card you might find it on eBay. Will be more expensive of course but maybe worth it for your child (I’ve done similar with super zings for mine). He’s now moved over more into Pokémon. Doesn’t do the cards but has a Pokémon handbook which he loves and his favourite Pokémon (not a standard one so again paid over the odds to get one shipped from abroad!) as a soft toy. Santa’s got him a funny t shirt with his favourite on, water bottle and a poster with a collection of them on for his stocking. Our kids are allowed to ask for a couple of items and then surprises in their letters to Santa so I think he’s asked for a new Pokémon console game as one of his.

This is brilliant thanks! How do I know if the cards on ebay/etsy are fake? He loves Charizard.

I got a batch of 100 random cards on ebay. DS was very happy and there were some rare ones and some shiny ones!!

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 11/11/2022 11:55

My DS is also obsessed and it doesn't seem to be waning.

There is a Pokémon guide that went down well the other year.

He also has Pokémon soft toys from build a bear which are huge, but he loves them!

Then you can go down the oodie, throw, beanbag, clothing route!

Theunamedcat · 11/11/2022 12:02

Pokemon trading card game there is one with a charizard deck the only downside is you need to play the game with them or get another pokemon obsessed child in to play

Do NOT buy the talking pokeballs they are so annoying 🙄

Go on amazon there is a new deck coming out soon I've preordered a set for my ds

Do you have any type of game cafe or comic shop near where you live? They often sell individual cards.
There is what I believe is a chain of game cafes called Geek Retreat and one I have gone to (in Kettering Northamptonshire) has ordinary cards for 10p and then the prices go higher for special ones.

My son is 24 and still Pokémon obsessed. On the plus side it makes him really easy to buy for. He collects the replica poke balls so I get him one every year. I'll add a few links of the Pokémon stocking fillers I've got below.

The last link is a really fun one, they do several different regions ( which are a bit like Pokémon countries) and they really do work. A great bit of fun. The noodle bowls are also very collectible and that will sell out very quickly. If you Google them, they are selling online for £30-60 each as they are very in demand. My son has a few different ones as I pick them up through the year when they are released. Primark often do Pokémon clothing. And depending on his shoe size, irregular choice do Pokémon shoes and they are all currently in the sale.

Oh I almost forgot, EMP is brilliant for Pokémon stuff

This site has boxes and tins and all sorts of other pokemon stuff. Does he play pokemon go?

I love pokemon, not as into the trading cards though, but forbidden planet has some great packs, if you have one near you definitely check it out.
If he's into the video games too, scarlet and violet are out next Friday :)
